Cypress-Northwest Houston Scoop — Issue #32

😂 Today's joke: Why did the dad bring a ladder to the family barbecue? He heard the steaks were high.

Happy Father's Day, neighbors! 👔 Whether you're firing up the grill, getting handed a crayon-drawn card, or just stealing a quiet cup of coffee on the patio, we hope today treats the dads right. Then we've got the news: a 20,000-square-foot thrift palace rising where your old H-E-B used to be, a STAAR report card that says our kids out-scored the entire state (with two very specific exceptions), and a blood drive that's basically cops vs. firefighters with you as the prize. Let's dig in. 👇

☀️ Today's weather: Hot and hazy with a high near 94°F 🌡️ and just a slight chance of an afternoon thunderstorm ⛈️ bubbling up — the kind that teases you with five minutes of rain and then leaves. Hydrate 💧 like it's your job, find some shade, and don't trust the clouds to do you any favors.

In this issue:

A 20,000-square-foot thrift palace is rising where your old H-E-B used to be

That hulking shell at 6960 Barker Cypress Road — the one that used to be an H-E-B, then a Planet Fitness — is about to get a second life as a thrift superstore. Value World is wrapping up a roughly $1 million interior buildout on about 20,733 square feet of space, turning it into one of the biggest secondhand shopping floors in Northwest Houston.

No grand-opening date has been announced yet, but the construction is listed as complete, so the racks can't be far behind. For the bargain hunters, sustainability nerds, and "I could totally flip that" crowd, this corner of Barker Cypress just got a lot more interesting.

Cy-Fair kids beat the whole state on STAAR — with two math-shaped asterisks

The spring STAAR results are in, and Cy-Fair ISD students in grades 3 through 8 out-scored the Texas state averages in all but two subjects. Seventh-grade math was the showstopper, running a full 16 points above the state average — the kind of gap that makes you wonder what those teachers are putting in the water.

The two exceptions both wear the same hat: math. Third-graders came in one point under the state average and eighth-graders landed nine points below. Reading, science (scores due July 31), and social studies otherwise carried the day. Worth a conversation at the dinner table — and maybe a flashcard or two before fall.

A celery-juice darling is circling Dunham Pointe — pack your patience

Flower Child, the wellness-forward restaurant brand from Fox Restaurant Concepts (the Sam Fox empire behind Culinary Dropout and The Henry), has filed plans to land at 14611 Mason Road, Suite 85A in the fast-growing Dunham Pointe development. Think grain bowls, big salads, and the kind of menu that makes you feel virtuous before you order the cookie anyway.

Here's the catch worth flagging up front: the paperwork pegs construction for May to November 2027, so this is a "someday" announcement, not a "this weekend" one. File it under good news with a long fuse — but in a corner of Cypress growing this fast, it's a sign of what's coming.

Cops vs. firefighters, and the prize is your blood

Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center is bringing back its Battle of the Badges, and it's exactly the kind of friendly grudge match this town loves. From June 29 through July 5, you roll up your sleeve, donate, and cast your vote for Team Police or Team Fire — bragging rights to the side that rallies the most donors.

Summer is a notoriously rough stretch for blood supply, so this one does double duty: pick your favorite first responders and help keep the shelves stocked heading into July 4th weekend. It's the rare competition where everybody actually wins.

A New York pizza joint crossed three states to plant its flag in Cy-Fair

Anthony & Luca's Pizza Kitchen picked Cy-Fair for its very first Texas location, and it opened quietly in late May at 9618 Jones Road. On the menu: New York–style pies, Philly cheesesteaks, and Italian street food — the franchise's whole "taste of the Northeast" pitch, now within delivery range.

For a neighborhood that takes its pizza debates seriously, a fresh contender from out of state is basically an open invitation to argue. Go settle it with a slice and tell us if the New York thing holds up under a Texas sun.

Manicures and a "head spa" are coming to Elyson — yes, a head spa

Onyx Nail Bar is headed to Elyson Town Center at 7028 Elyson Exchange Way in Cypress, per a state licensing filing. Beyond the expected manicures and pedicures, the spot bills itself as a nail salon and head spa — facials, brows, lashes, and the increasingly popular "wash your stress away by your scalp" treatment.

For the Elyson crowd, it's one more reason to keep the self-care budget close to home instead of driving across 290. Consider this your heads-up before the appointment book fills.
