☀️ Today's weather: The sun woke up today and chose violence. We're headed for 98°F with a heat index up to 106° — the kind of afternoon where the seatbelt buckle doubles as a branding iron. There's a 30% chance the sky picks a fight back with a pop-up storm in the 4–5 PM window, then we "cool" to the upper 70s overnight. Water the plants early, walk the dog before 9, and declare 2 PM indoor o'clock. 🥵

Some news we wish we never had to write. A young child died Saturday evening after being found unresponsive in an apartment complex pool on Wortham Boulevard in the Cypress area, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. Details are still limited, and our hearts are with the child's family and everyone in that community this morning.

If you're poolside with little ones this summer, please take one thing from this: designate a single adult as the water-watcher — one name, not "everybody" — and keep eyes up and phones down while kids are in the water. Drowning is fast and almost always silent, and a dedicated watcher is the single best protection a family has.

A man was shot several times Friday morning and then crashed his car into a home on Mountain Dale Drive, the Harris County Sheriff's Office said. He survived and was taken for treatment; deputies are still piecing together what led to the gunfire.

It's an unsettling thing to wake up to on a holiday weekend, and we're thankful it wasn't worse. If you live nearby and saw or heard anything — or have doorbell-camera footage from Friday morning — it could help investigators put this together.

After more than nine hours of debate on June 26, the State Board of Education approved a sweeping rewrite of Texas' social studies curriculum — new standards plus a list of dozens of required books each school year, both infused with biblical references and Texas-centered history. It rolls out to classrooms in the 2030-31 school year.

Here's the part that makes this a Cy-Fair story: today's CFISD second-graders will be among the first classes to learn history the new way. Whatever side of this you land on, it's one of the biggest changes to what Texas kids are taught in a generation — worth knowing about four years before it hits the backpack.

Poof. Voodoo Doughnut has shuttered its 1301 N. Fry location (along with its Westheimer shop), per the Houston Press. The pink-boxed Portland import opened the Fry Road store in November 2022, and now the west side's supply of bacon-topped maple bars is officially cut off.

We'll say what everyone's thinking: the quirky-doughnut gold rush was fun while it lasted, but the locals never stopped quietly out-frying the franchises. Pour one out (coffee, obviously), then go remind your neighborhood doughnut shop why it's still standing.

New TEA data shows that among students learning English across Greater Houston school districts, Spanish, Vietnamese and Arabic were the most common home languages in 2025-26. That's not a footnote — it's a snapshot of who our neighbors are and what walks through the school doors every morning.

Harris County Attorney Abbie Kamin has joined more than 100 current and former state and local election officials in an amicus brief asking a federal court to block a Trump administration executive order on how elections are run.
