☀️ Today’s weather: Monday isn’t easing anybody back in. Wall-to-wall sunshine, a high near 98°F, and a heat index flirting with 103 — the kind of day where your steering wheel files a workplace-temperature complaint. There’s a 20% chance the sky throws a late tantrum with a pop-up storm after 4 p.m., but don’t bank on it for lawn relief. Water the plants before 8, walk the dog on grass, and let the car A/C run a lap before you get in.

Here’s a pairing nobody ordered: on June 30, Jersey Village published its 2025 Drinking Water Quality Report, proudly noting that “all regulated drinking water standards were met during the 2025 reporting period.” One day earlier, the city posted a TCEQ notice that its drinking water had exceeded the maximum contaminant level for selenium, with a second-quarter 2026 compliance value of 0.060 mg/L — above the 0.05 mg/L standard.

Both can be true at once — the clean report card covers 2025, and the selenium exceedance is a 2026 development — but if you live in Jersey Village, the newer letter is the one to actually read. It spells out what the exceedance means and what the city is doing about it, and the 2025 water quality report is worth a skim while you’re at it.

While the rest of us were planning cookouts, CFISD made a July 2 roster move: Rodney Garcia, assistant principal at Salyards Middle School, is the new principal of Reed Elementary. He’s trading hallway drama of the middle-school variety for the under-four-foot crowd — a jump plenty of educators would call the toughest (and most adorable) promotion in the business.

Reed families, that’s your welcome-back-to-school name to know before the supply lists drop. And if your kiddo came up through Salyards, you already know the man can command a cafeteria.

inkDOTS has been printing Cypress’ banners, wraps, and storefront signs since 2006 — two decades of making other businesses look good. On June 29, the large-format print shop finally gave itself the headline treatment and relocated to Jarvis Road.

There’s something we love about a 20-year local operation still growing while the big-box world wobbles. If a business has survived every Cypress boom, bust, and road-construction season since flip phones, it’s doing something right. Go get a banner made.

File this under “retail concepts we didn’t see coming”: HTX Cigars soft-opened a drive-through cigar shop in Cypress on July 1, with a full grand opening still to come this month. That means somewhere between the coffee lane and the pharmacy lane, you can now pick up a hand-rolled maduro without leaving the driver’s seat.

We have questions — starting with whether the speaker box says “welcome to HTX, would you like to try our robusto?” — but mostly we’re impressed by the audacity. Cypress retail keeps finding new lanes. Literally.

Cyclospora — a parasite that causes a genuinely miserable multi-week stomach illness — is having its annual summer moment, and Texas is tied with Illinois for the most reported cases in the country, with as many as 30 since May 1. The kicker: it can survive routine produce washing, which is exactly the news nobody wanted about their berries and fresh herbs.

The practical playbook: scrub produce under running water (a soak won’t cut it), keep imported fresh herbs and greens extra-suspect, and see a doctor if a stomach bug overstays its welcome past a few days — this one needs specific treatment, not just crackers and Gatorade.
