☀️ Today’s weather: Tuesday is running a scam: the sky will look absolutely innocent — wall-to-wall sunshine, not a rain cloud in sight — while quietly cooking us to 97°F with a heat index up to 106. Zero percent rain chance means zero excuses and zero mercy. Do the outdoor errands before 10, park in the shade like it’s a competitive sport, and keep the water bottle closer than your phone. Relief (and actual rain chances) don’t show up until Friday.

A family in the Copperfield subdivision escaped their home overnight this weekend after fireworks that hadn’t been fully extinguished caught fire in the trash. Cy-Fair Fire Department crews arrived at the house on River Garden Drive to find heavy fire and smoke at the rear of the home. Thankfully, every resident got out safely.

If you still have spent fireworks sitting in a trash can or a pile from the Fourth, please take two minutes today: CFFD says to soak used fireworks in water for at least eight hours before throwing them away. It’s a small chore that kept this story from being a far worse one — and it’s worth a text to any neighbor who put on their own backyard show this weekend.

Some news we simply carry together. A 2-year-old child and a 74-year-old woman died after drowning in a pond in the Spring Lakes neighborhood of north Harris County, according to the sheriff’s office. Details are still limited, and our hearts are with their family and everyone in that community this morning.

It has been a devastating stretch for water tragedies in our area. If you have little ones around any water this summer — a pool, a pond, a lake — designate one adult as the water watcher whose only job is eyes on the kids, keep barriers and gates latched, and remember that drowning is fast and silent. Checking on each other is the most neighborly thing we can do.

Houston Methodist announced a record $110 million philanthropic gift — the largest in the system’s history — to advance neuroscience research and women’s health care. That’s not a wing-with-a-plaque donation; that’s a change-what-medicine-can-do donation, aimed at conditions that touch nearly every family we know.

And before you file this under “downtown news”: Houston Methodist is the same system with hospitals serving our corner of the county, including right here in Cypress and at Willowbrook. Research dollars at the top have a way of showing up in the exam rooms closest to home.

Here’s a flex most towns can’t pull off: Cypress Winds — the community band made up of 70+ music educators from more than 35 local school programs — has been named a featured ensemble at the 2026 Texas Bandmasters Association Convention in San Antonio. Translation: the people who teach your kids band are good enough that the state’s band directors are coming to hear them.

Before they take the Lila Cockrell Theatre stage, they’re playing the whole convention program for us first — a free Summer Send-Off Concert on Tuesday, July 14 at the CFISD Visual & Performing Arts Center, 11420 Matzke Road. Doors at 6:15 p.m., music at 7. Founded in 2024 and already playing statewide stages: go clap loudly for your kid’s band director.

Some traditions don’t need explaining: on Tuesday, July 14 at 10 a.m., Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman’s annual Free Watermelon Giveaway returns to Atkinson Farms Produce at 3217 Spring Cypress Road. One free homegrown watermelon per family, while supplies last, no county funds involved — just deputies handing out melons at a farm stand that’s been feeding this area for generations.

It’s the best kind of local event: zero tickets, zero speeches, one very heavy piece of fruit. Go early, say hi to the deputies, and maybe grab some Atkinson Farms produce while you’re there — supporting a legacy farm is the least we can do for free watermelon.

Lazy Dog Restaurant’s Cypress location is spending the summer treating dogs like the family members they are. The headliner comes August 24–27, when every Dog Bowl ordered sends $1 to Pet Partners — the nonprofit behind therapy animal teams in hospitals, schools, and senior centers — and comes with a card for a free Dog Bowl on your next visit. On National Dog Day itself (August 26), the first 50 pups on the patio score a limited-edition bandana.

Yes, that’s a restaurant where your dog has a standing dinner reservation and a philanthropy record. Mark the calendar — August you will thank July you, and your dog was going to stare at your plate anyway.

Cotton Patch Cafe — the Texas comfort-food chain born in Nacogdoches in 1989, famous for hand-breaded chicken fried steak and $9.99 Texas Value Meals — has been sold to Dallas-based Local Favorite Restaurants, the group behind El Fenix, Twisted Root Burger, and Meso Maya. The deal covers all 46 locations, including the only Houston-area outpost on FM 2920 in Spring.

The new owners swear nothing sacred changes: “We will continue to bring the small-town spirit, big Texas value, and quality scratch-made food guests count on,” says CEO Brandon Coleman III. We’ll allow it — but we’re keeping one skeptical eye on that chicken fried steak. Some things in Texas are not to be optimized.
