Thirteen-year-old Vlad Skuridin was playing video games in his room near Cypress View Drive and Spring Cypress Road when lightning struck his family’s home, sparking a fire in the attic. “I honestly thought I was gonna die,” he told KPRC 2. Precinct 4 deputies responded, and thankfully, Vlad and his family made it out safely.

Houston summer storms build fast and strike faster, and this family’s close call is a reminder for all of us: when thunder starts, head inside, stay off corded devices, and if the worst happens, get everyone out first — a house can be rebuilt. Our thoughts are with the Skuridins as they recover from a terrifying night.

Marilyn Gonzales of Cypress bought World Cup tickets for her family — and StubHub canceled the order for the Portugal match they’d planned around. She pushed back, KPRC 2’s “2 Helps You” team got involved, and in the eleventh hour the company came through with replacement tickets to Morocco vs. Canada, Houston’s final World Cup match. Not the game they bought, but the family got their World Cup moment.

Here’s the bigger scoreline: three separate Houston-area families with canceled StubHub orders have gotten tickets in the past 10 days after going to the news, and the Texas Attorney General is now probing StubHub. If a resale platform burned you this tournament, you’re clearly not alone — and the squeaky wheels are getting seats.

Kristi Williams, a former employee of the Tomball ISD Tax Office, has been charged by federal authorities with wire fraud, accused of taking $996,174 from the district. Tomball ISD broke the news in a letter to families and staff — the kind of letter no superintendent ever wants to write.

That’s just up the road from us, and it’s roughly a million dollars that was supposed to fund classrooms, buses, and teacher paychecks. Federal wire fraud cases move slowly but hit hard, so expect this one to stay in the headlines. We’ll keep watching.

State Rep. Nate Schatzline of Fort Worth resigned his seat July 2 to become Gov. Abbott’s senior adviser on election-integrity policy — a role he steps into, as the Houston Press notes, with “no previous election administration experience.” There’s already speculation he’s being positioned to replace Secretary of State Jane Nelson, who steps down July 17.

Why should Cy-Fair care about a Fort Worth guy’s career move? Because the Secretary of State’s office looms large over how Harris County — the state’s biggest — runs the November midterms. Whoever lands that chair will have a say in how your polling place works. Worth keeping an eye on.
