Good morning, Cy-Fair — you made it to Friday, and the news did not coast into the weekend. ☕ Today: the orange-apron empire picks a corner of 77433, a chicken joint that wants to feed 50 of you FREE for a year, and your Walmart order might literally fly over your house. Skip this issue and you’ll be the last one on the block to know. Let’s go. 👇
☀️ Today’s weather: The sky is running a two-act play today, Cypress. Act one: partly sunny, sticky, and climbing to 96 with a heat index brushing 104 — the kind of air you chew before you breathe it. Act two: a 30% chance the clouds pick a fight after 10 a.m. and throw down a thunderstorm. Water the plants early, keep the umbrella in the truck, and treat your afternoon iced tea as medically necessary.

The Wild World of the Van Gogh Truthers
In 1990, after years of practicing medicine and reviewing Van Gogh’s case history via his hundreds of letters, Arenberg published a paper in JAMA diagnosing Van Gogh as suffering not from epilepsy, as the artist’s physician claimed a century earlier, but from Ménière’s disease, an inner-ear affliction that can cause vertigo, of which Van Gogh complained, and tinnitus, a persistent ringing in the ears. Ménière’s, to Arenberg, could better explain Van Gogh’s decision to slice off his ear. After retiring, in 2017, Arenberg recommitted himself to studying Van Gogh and became convinced that art historians had made an even more alarming mistake: Van Gogh had not committed suicide. He’d been murdered.

🧡 The honey-do excuses are officially endangered — Home Depot just picked a corner of 77433
“The store was too far” has had a good run in Elyson, but its days are numbered. A new Home Depot is planned for the east side of the Grand Parkway, just south of the West Road intersection in Cypress’s 77433 — putting the orange aprons squarely in the middle of one of the fastest-growing corridors in Northwest Houston.
The bigger story is what it says about the neighborhood: when big-box anchors start planting flags along the Grand Parkway near Elyson, the “out there past everything” era of that stretch is over. Your weekend projects — and your impulse plant purchases — are about to get a much shorter commute.

🍗 Stand in line July 18, eat free for a YEAR — Layne’s is betting you love chicken that much
Clear your calendar, chicken people. Layne’s Chicken Fingers — the College Station cult favorite — opens at 9850 Fry Road on Saturday, July 18, and the first 50 dine-in guests in line get free Layne’s for an entire year. That’s not a coupon. That’s a lifestyle.
If you’ve never had Layne’s, the sauce is the thing — Aggies have argued about its secret recipe for decades. And there’s a neighborly bonus baked into opening weekend: a giveback benefiting Cy-Fair High School. Wear comfortable shoes; something tells us the line starts before sunrise.

🏛️ Someone tried to delete Harris County’s most powerful unelected job — it lasted one meeting
Wednesday’s Commissioners Court came with a plot twist: an emergency item, added same-day, aimed at re-examining — and potentially dissolving — the county administrator role, the top unelected job that keeps the county’s day-to-day machinery running. Commissioners shot it down.
Whatever your politics, the move matters out here: the administrator’s office touches everything from flood-control coordination to how fast county services reach Cy-Fair. The role survives — but the fact that it landed on the agenda as an “emergency” tells you plenty about the temperature at 1001 Preston these days.

🗑️ $21.60 a year: Jersey Village puts a price tag on your taxes and your trash
Jersey Village neighbors, your July 17 just got interesting. City Council holds a budget work session that day to hash out the proposed FY 2026-27 budget, the tax rate, and — everyone’s favorite line item — waste disposal fees. Under the current proposed rate, residents would pay about $21.60 more per year.
Twenty-two bucks won’t break anyone, but this is the meeting where the number is still negotiable — speak up before it’s set in stone, not after. Council is also expected to pick a replacement for the open Place 3 seat on July 21, so it’s a big month at City Hall.

🚁 Look up: your Walmart order may now be flying over 290
The skies over Northwest Houston just got busier. Walmart added eight more Houston-area stores to its Wing drone-delivery network this week — including 13003 Tomball Parkway, 12353 FM 1960 West, and 13484 Northwest Freeway. Translation: that emergency ketchup run can now arrive by air.
We covered Zipline’s first Cypress drone flights back in the spring; this is the other team scaling up fast. Between the two, Northwest Houston is quietly becoming one of the droniest delivery markets in America — a sentence we did not expect to type in 2026.

💆 Bridgeland’s about to get very, very relaxed — a wellness studio lands on Tuckerton July 18
Bridgeland’s newest neighbor wants to un-knot your shoulders. Degree Wellness Cypress-Bridgeland sets its grand opening for Saturday, July 18, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 20725 Tuckerton Road, bringing recovery and self-care services to a community that takes its 5 a.m. workouts very seriously.
The timing is no accident — wellness out here has shifted from occasional spa splurge to weekly maintenance, and Bridgeland’s trails-and-training crowd is exactly the clientele. Sore from that Saturday long run? Now there’s a business model for you.

A road-rage crash on the Tomball Tollway — and two babies who weren’t buckled in
Some news we share simply because every parent and grandparent needs to hear it. On July 6, Harris County Precinct 4 deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash in the 28200 block of the Tomball Tollway that investigators say stemmed from a road-rage incident. Inside the wrecked vehicle were two young children — a 2-year-old and a 1-year-old — and neither was properly secured in a child safety seat. The driver was arrested and faces child endangerment charges.
Thankfully, this is a story about charges and not something far worse. Please let it be the nudge to double-check the car seats in your own back seat tonight — chest clip at armpit level, straps snug, seat anchored. And when another driver loses their temper on the road, let them go. No argument is worth what was risked here.

Scoop Trivia
Yesterday’s answer: 1939. That’s when the Cypress and Fairbanks districts voted to merge — and Cypress-Fairbanks ISD (and its hyphen) were born.
Today: Cypress’s earliest settlers arrived in the 1840s, mostly from one European country — which one? Reply with your guess — answer in tomorrow’s Scoop.
