☀️ Today’s weather: Cypress is playing it coy this morning — partly sunny, muggy, and climbing toward 92, with a heat index flirting with 105 by lunch. Then the clouds get ideas: a 40–60% chance of afternoon thunderstorms rolling in after 1 p.m., some loud, some quick. Translation: run the errands and hit the farmers market early, keep the umbrella in the truck, and treat the pool as a strictly-morning affair today.

Pour one out — actually, hold that pour. The Panera Breads that went dark across North Houston last August aren’t gone for good. Per a July 9 release from Hamra Enterprises, the chain is reopening seven previously shuttered locations across Katy, Cy-Fair, Spring and Conroe, starting with the Spring and Katy cafés this month.

The backstory has some drama: those stores abruptly shut down last summer in the wake of a high-profile franchise dispute. Now new owners have picked up the keys, promising around 280 jobs and a return of the You Pick Two to a neighborhood that clearly missed it. One Costco was never going to be enough for a place growing this fast. A second Cypress warehouse is on the way to the corner of the Grand Parkway and FM 529 — right across from Cypress Park High School and next door to the Elyson and Marvida crowd — joining the original out on Hwy. 290.

The numbers are exactly as big as you’d hope: a $64.5 million, 160,000-square-foot store paired with a $3.3 million, 16-pump fuel center. Construction kicked off back in the spring, with doors projected to open before the year is out. Start clearing space in the garage for the 48-pack of paper towels now.

Here’s an easy win for your Saturday. Willowbrook Mall is collecting new backpacks, notebooks and classroom supplies through Aug. 1 for BEAR’s Back to School program, which outfits at-risk and CPS-involved kids across Greater Houston for the first day of school.

It’s the kind of thing that costs you one extra aisle at the store and means everything to a kid walking in nervous on day one. Toss a second backpack in the cart, drop it at the mall, and you’ve quietly made someone’s whole year. Not a bad trade.

Enjoy the last of summer, CFISD families, because the district is about to ping your inbox. Starting the week of July 13, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD will email parents and guardians a reminder to log into the CFISD Parent Portal and open the Home Access Center to complete the Annual Student Update for any student returning in 2026-27.

Even if nothing’s changed at your house, it’s not optional — you’ll need to review and acknowledge the enrollment documents, the Student Code of Conduct, attendance rules and those photo/video release choices. Knock it out on a rainy afternoon this week and skip the back-to-school scramble. (Locked out? The Customer Care Center is at 281-897-4357.)

A Fourth of July that could have ended much worse is worth a moment of everyone’s attention. Late on the holiday, Cy-Fair firefighters were called to a home on River Garden Drive in Copperfield, where flames and heavy smoke were pouring from the back of the house. Thankfully, the residents got out safely.

The cause, investigators say, was fireworks that had been used and thrown away — still holding enough heat to reignite hours later. Cy-Fair FD’s reminder is simple and worth repeating to your own family tonight: soak every spent firework in water for at least eight hours before it goes in the trash. The department even offers free safety buckets to make it easy.

As Bridgeland keeps sprouting new neighborhoods, the fire trucks are moving in to keep up. Newly filed state records lay out plans for Cy-Fair Fire Station 17 at 21500 North Bridgeland Lake Parkway — a roughly 20,000-square-foot, $13 million fire and EMS facility with apparatus bays, living quarters and its own fuel island. Construction is targeted to begin in late November, wrapping about a year later.

Here’s the stat that actually matters when it’s your emergency: Cy-Fair FD says strategic station placement has already dropped average response times across the district from nearly 12 minutes to about six. Station 17 is one of eight planned to keep that number low as the west side fills in — and notably, the department says it’s paying for it from reserves, not taxpayer-backed debt.

Good news and bad news on the tollway you can’t avoid. The good: TxDOT is widening the Grand Parkway from four lanes to six, from West Road to just south of Hwy. 290 — long-overdue breathing room for one of the most jammed stretches in Northwest Houston. The bad: to get there, we all have to survive the construction.

The $72.6 million project hit TxDOT’s letting schedule this spring, with crews expected to break ground over the summer. Pair it with the nearby Greenhouse Road underpass work and the message is clear: cones are coming, so build a few extra minutes into your West Road runs. Six lanes will be worth it — eventually.
