☀️ Today’s weather: More of that classic Gulf Coast sauna today, neighbors — mostly sunny to start, muggy all day, and climbing toward 92 with a heat index flirting with 102 by early afternoon. Then the sky gets restless: a 30–55% shot at afternoon and evening thunderstorms, a couple of which could dump heavy rain in a hurry. Translation: run the outdoor errands this morning, keep the umbrella handy after 1 p.m., and don’t be the person caught mowing at 3 o’clock.

Cypress, prepare your TBR pile. X&O Books, a romance-forward independent bookstore, is set to open this month near Hwy. 290 and Spring Cypress Road — and it’s not just a shelf of paperbacks. Owner and Cypress native Kara French is building an actual hangout: mainstream romance, plus contemporary, Western and “romantasy,” a “713 shelf” spotlighting local authors, and even a shelf of picks curated by her husband (officially dubbed “Mr. X&O”).

The genius part is the lounge and bar serving wine and dirty sodas, because French wanted a place where women could sit down, linger, and talk books with like-minded readers instead of speed-walking a chain store. There’s a monthly subscription box and a weekly evening book club, too. Find it at 25712 Hwy. 290, Ste. I.

Some weeks you just need to throw a plate against a wall — and now you can do it legally, with safety goggles on. iSmash, a “stress-relieving entertainment center,” is open at 8504 Highway 6 N, bringing rage rooms, black-light splatter painting and axe throwing to the neighborhood. Co-owners Justin Mayo and Clayton Harris cut the ribbon after a soft opening in June, and yes, they rent private rooms for parties.

Think of it as the anti-yoga: instead of finding your center, you obliterate a stack of old dishes and call it therapy. Bookings start at $30, which is roughly what a nice candle costs — and considerably more satisfying. Bring the coworker who’s been Slacking you at 9 p.m., is all we’re saying.

On a day with a heat index near 102, this is less “news” and more “public service.” SweetCup Gelato and Sorbet Originale has brought a taste of Italy to the Cypress area, serving handmade gelato in a rotating lineup of flavors made in-house. It’s the kind of small, wonderful thing that makes a growing suburb feel a little more like a place with a main street.

Gelato, for the record, is denser and less icy than regular ice cream — more flavor per spoonful, which is exactly the energy we’re looking for right now. Consider this your permission slip: the storms roll in this afternoon anyway, so you might as well be holding a cup when they do.

For everyone whose New Year’s resolution is technically still alive: reinforcements are coming. Flower Child, a fast-casual spot built around “holistic” eating, is coming soon to Cypress, with a menu of protein entrées and a build-your-own lineup of veggie-forward sides. It’s the kind of place designed to make eating well feel less like a punishment and more like a treat.

We’ll admit it’s a funny one-two punch with the gelato above — but that’s Cypress in 2026 for you: a little indulgence, a little penance, all within a few minutes’ drive. Balance, neighbors. Balance.

Here’s a warm one for the parents. Kidcreate Studio, which started as a mobile art studio rolling into daycares and schools around Cy-Fair last summer, just celebrated the grand opening of its first brick-and-mortar home at 20029 House & Hahl Road, Ste. 301. The studio ran an open house Saturday with hands-on art, science and sensory stations for the little ones.

Founder Lara Olson started the whole thing after struggling to find the right art class for her own son — and now there’s a permanent, kid-sized creative space right here offering weekly classes, camps, workshops and birthday parties. Rainy-summer-afternoon problem, meet your solution.

A number worth pausing on: Cy-Fair EMS says calls from assisted-living communities jumped 91% between 2020 and 2025. It’s not a scandal — it’s simple math. As our corner of Harris County grows and more senior-living facilities open across Cy-Fair, the calls for help climb right alongside them, and our first responders are absorbing the load.

It’s a good reminder of what these crews carry every day, and of the neighbors on the other end of those calls. If you’ve got an older loved one in a local community, it’s worth a quick check that their emergency contacts and medication list are current and easy to find — small things that make a paramedic’s hardest minutes go faster.
