Good morning, Cy-Fair. ☕ It's Wednesday, the sky's cued up the sprinklers again, and Cypress is doing that thing where the umbrella's in one hand and the coffee's in the other and neither is negotiable. Today's issue is short on drama and long on doing: a free class that turns you into the neighbor who actually knows what to do in a storm, a leadership program for teens that costs a flat zero dollars, a council seat that gets filled on the spot next Tuesday, and a Wildcat volleyball squad that just got the magazine treatment. Today's weather: Cypress, we're not going to sugarcoat it — the sky means business today. Rain chances sit around 90%, with thunderstorms and some locally heavy downpours in the mix, a high near a downright cool-for-July 79°, and a soft south-southeast breeze at 5 to 10 mph. Nothing flagged as severe, but "heavy downpour" plus our already-soggy streets is the recipe for ponding, so give yourself extra time, keep the wipers fresh, and — say it with us — never drive into water when you can't see the bottom of the road. Turn around, don't drown.

After the week Jersey Village just had, this one lands differently. Cy-Fair CERT — the Community Emergency Response Team — just opened enrollment for Class 46, a free, hands-on course that teaches regular neighbors how to actually help when the power's out, the water's rising, or the ambulance is ten minutes away and someone can't wait ten minutes.

Classes start Tuesday, August 18, and meet Tuesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Lone Star College Emergency Services Center, 19015 West Road in Cypress. Over the run you'll cover fire safety and suppression, medical triage and wound care, disaster simulation, and a final certification drill — the kind of skills that turn "I froze" into "I handled it." Enrollment is free but limited, and you sign up by emailing [email protected].

Here's a summer to-do that pays off long after the pool closes. Applications are open for the 2026–27 Lone Star College Leadership High School program — a tuition-free, honest-to-goodness zero-dollar opportunity for public high school sophomores and juniors across the Lone Star College service area, including right here in Cy-Fair.

This isn't a throwaway certificate. The program has graduated more than 2,000 students from 11 different school districts, running monthly leadership sessions that kick off with an October orientation. "It's a transformative experience," is the pitch from LSCS leadership director Kay Fitzsimons — and the only catch is a calendar one: applications close September 17. Democracy doesn't get much more up-close than this. Jersey Village has an empty Place 3 council seat — Michelle Martin resigned after deciding to relocate — and instead of dragging out a special election, the council is filling it live in one meeting. Applicants each get exactly three minutes to make their case, and the council votes and seats the winner the same night.

The audition happens at the regular council meeting Tuesday, July 21 at 7 p.m. in the Civic Center Auditorium, 16327 Lakeview Drive. Applications have already closed (Martin publicly recommended resident Ashley Brown as her successor), so the drama now is watching your neighbors pitch and your council decide in real time. Football gets the summer headlines, but the volleyball nets are already up.
