Good morning, Cy-Fair. 🥵 Saturday clocks in at a face-melting 98° with a heat index near 106° and an actual heat advisory, so consider this your official permission to do absolutely nothing outdoors before sundown. Good news to sweat to: three shuttered Paneras are clawing back from the dead, a beloved local nonprofit needs your hall closet by Monday, and Sunday hands us the actual World Cup Final. ☀️ Today's weather: Cypress, the sun isn't playing today. We open mostly sunny and bake to a brutal 98°, with a heat index climbing toward 106° and a heat advisory on the board — the kind of afternoon that turns your steering wheel into a branding iron. Some charities ask for your money. Cy-Fair Helping Hands just asks you to check your hall closet. The all-volunteer nonprofit is gearing up for its 5th Annual Back to School Bash on Saturday, July 25 (9 a.m.–noon) at Calvary Community Church, 7550 Cherry Park Drive — and it's bracing to send more than 1,000 CFISD kids into the new year with free backpacks, school supplies, books, food, carnival games, and even a visit from first responders and the Cypress Ranch cheerleaders.

Here's the part with a clock on it: they're collecting donations right now. New backpacks and supplies (crayons, markers, notebooks) are wanted through July 22, and gently used K–12 clothing through July 20 — drop them at 9204 Emmott Road (Mon–Thu, 9:30 a.m.–1 p.m.) or anytime at 12923 Enchanted Drive. "The purpose of this event is to provide backpacks and school supplies for financially strapped families," says director Pat Hudson. A spare notebook you already own becomes a kid's whole first day.

If your go-to bread bowl went dark last year, help is on the way — times three. Three Panera Bread locations across Cy-Fair and Northwest Houston are reopening: 12220 FM 1960 West, 22521 Tomball Parkway near Willowbrook, and 13704 Northwest Freeway along U.S. 290. They didn't close because you stopped showing up; the previous franchisee, EYM Café of Texas, lost its agreement and filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy last August, taking the lights out with it.

The comeback is bigger than soup. New operator Hamra Enterprises — which already runs 88 Paneras and has a long nonprofit-giving streak — is reopening seven Houston-area spots in stages by the end of 2026, spinning up roughly 280 jobs in the process. No exact per-store dates yet, so keep that You-Pick-Two muscle memory on standby.

Turns out the best undefeated streak in Cy-Fair isn't on a scoreboard — it's in the art room. CFISD's Visual Arts Program was named a District of Distinction by the Texas Art Education Association for the sixth straight year, a run most districts never even get started. To earn it, the program had to hit all 14 statewide performance benchmarks and blow past 11 of them.

Behind the banner is a lot of unglamorous grind: hundreds of volunteer hours, dozens of contests entered, student work hung in real public shows. "Being recognized… for the sixth consecutive year is an incredible honor," said Visual Arts Coordinator Dr. Lee Carrier — the kind of honor earned one sketchbook at a time. Hurricane season has a new neighbor. DuroMax Power is opening its first-ever Texas showroom at 18836 Telge Road, and it's cutting the ribbon Thursday, July 23 (11:30 a.m.–1 p.m.) with facility tours, live product demos, and free food. The company builds the gas, propane, and natural-gas backup generators that plenty of Cy-Fair garages already quietly depend on.

For a corner of Houston that knows the special dread of a summer power flicker, a showroom down the road means kicking the tires before the next storm — instead of panic-ordering online at 2 a.m. during a warning. Consider it a very on-brand welcome to the neighborhood.

The great Cy-Fair childcare hunt just added an option. Kiddie Academy of Longenbaugh is opening at 17909 Longenbaugh Road in Cypress, with a Cy-Fair Chamber ribbon cutting set for July 27. The national early-learning brand brings its education-focused daycare and preschool programs to a fast-growing stretch of northwest Cypress.

If you've called around for a daycare spot lately, you know the waitlists read like concert presales. A new center is one more shot at the unicorn combo every working parent chases: close to home and actually has openings. Worth a call before word gets out.

Cypress date night just got a summer upgrade for the price of a movie ticket. Sister steakhouses Dario's (14315 Cypress Rosehill Rd) and Marvino's (24002 Northwest Fwy) are each pouring a $13 seasonal spritz — the "Golden Hour" at Dario's, the "Desert Summer" at Marvino's — for a limited time only.
