Good morning, Cy-Fair. ⚽ The whole planet is staring at one soccer field today — the actual World Cup Final — so clear the couch and forgive yourself for zero productivity. While you're at it: eight local steakhouses are about to turn your dinner into a food-bank donation, the cops are grabbing serving trays on Thursday for a very good reason, and one Cypress viola teacher just beat cancer without losing the thing she loves most. Don't be alarmed if the person refilling your sweet tea has a badge and a radio. On Thursday, July 23, from 5–9 p.m., off-duty deputies are trading patrol for serving trays at both Texas Roadhouse locations — 13345 FM 1960 W in Cy-Fair and 22020 West Rd in Cypress — for the annual Special Olympics Texas "Tip-A-Cop" fundraiser.

The officers, part of the Texas Law Enforcement Torch Run, will greet tables and collect donations alongside the regular staff (your server still keeps their tips — the Special Olympics money is separate). Every dollar bankrolls training and competition for local athletes with intellectual disabilities. Go for the ribs, stay for the rare chance to watch a deputy hustle a bread basket.

For University of Houston music professor and longtime Cypress-area resident Penny Meitz, a triple-negative breast cancer diagnosis came with a second, quieter fear: that the standard chemo could numb her hands and end a lifetime at the viola. Up to 40% of chemo patients develop that kind of nerve damage — a career-ender for someone whose whole life is her fingertips.

So her team at Houston Methodist Neal Cancer Center at Willowbrook built a gentler path. Dr. Mervat Saleh tailored a lighter regimen — surgery on a sub-2-centimeter tumor with no lymph-node spread, a shortened two-drug chemo course instead of three, and radiation — all close to home while Meitz kept teaching. She finished treatment with her hands intact and is playing again. "Music is who I am," she said. "Being able to stay involved with students and play means everything."

Bad news for your beach bag: that SPF makeup you've been trusting isn't pulling its weight, and neither is the sunscreen you applied once at 9 a.m. and forgot. Houston Methodist dermatologists just called out the summer sins we're all guilty of — skipping cloudy days, missing the scalp, ears, neck, hands and feet, and leaning on cosmetics to do a lotion's job.

The fix is refreshingly boring: broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, about a full ounce to cover your body, slathered on 20 minutes before you head out, then reapplied every two hours (sooner if you're swimming or sweating through a Cypress afternoon). Twenty-five years ago, firefighter Stephen Siller ran through a Brooklyn tunnel in full gear toward the Twin Towers and never came back. The run named for him returns to Cypress for a fifth year: the Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk is set for Saturday, Sept. 19, at 7:30 a.m. at John Paul Landing Park (9950 Katy Hockley Rd.) — and registration is open now.

The Foundation it feeds supports fallen and catastrophically injured first responders, military heroes, and their families. Sign-up runs $35 for adults, $30 for first responders and military, $20 for teens and $10 for kids — with first responders and military getting the nod, as they should. September's a long way off, but the good ones fill up; grab your spot while the morning air is still (theoretically) cooler.
