☀️ Today's joke: What's a pirate's favorite school subject? Arrrt class!
Good morning, Cy-Fair. ☀️ Nobody asked for it, but the calendar just whispered "back to school" — and today's Scoop is proof it's already sneaking up. We've got a backpack bash with a Wednesday deadline, Dolly Parton offering to mail your kid a free book every month, and a constable handing out snow cones like it's his job (it kind of is). Also: a Bridgeland burger stand you may have driven past a hundred times without realizing it's open till midnight. Grab the cold brew — it's a 94° kind of day. Let's go. 👇
☀️ Today's weather: Cypress, the storms tapped out overnight and left us with a straight-up summer scorcher. Look for wall-to-wall sunshine, a high knocking on 94°, and a clear, muggy night bottoming out around 74° — no rain to bail you out this time, and tomorrow only cranks it hotter (96°). Translation: this is a hydrate-in-the-shade, park-in-the-garage, don't-touch-the-seatbelt-buckle kind of Monday. Drink more water than you think you need.
In this issue:
The backpacks you cleaned out are about to meet their kids — and there's still time to add one
Bridgeland's been hiding a burger stand that stays open till midnight
Dolly Parton will mail your kid a book every month for exactly zero dollars
A constable, a commissioner, and a truckload of free snow cones
The other back-to-school list — this one's built for the 50-and-up crowd
Six years running, Texas keeps handing Cy-Fair's art program the same trophy
The #1 Roth Conversion Mistake That Costs Retirees
Most people missed the first Roth conversion window. History is offering a rare second chance — but not a long one.
With today's tax rates extended, IRA Millionaires have a brief stretch of historically low brackets left. When it closes, the math changes: higher rates, bigger required distributions, and fewer conversion opportunities each year you wait.
Craig Wear, CFP®, has spent 15+ years helping more than 3,000 families with $1M+ in IRAs plan Roth conversions — helping them avoid a projected $10B+ in lifetime taxes. His new book, Roth Conversion Reset, is the step-by-step playbook:
Lock in today's low rates
Avoid RMD surprises at 73
Protect your spouse from survivor taxes
Keep more for your heirs
The book is free — no credit card, no shipping. The full PDF lands in your inbox in minutes.

The backpacks you cleaned out are about to meet their kids — and there's still time to add one
Remember that closet-clean-out backpack drive we nudged you about? Here's the finish line. Cy-Fair Helping Hands throws its 5th Annual Back to School Bash on Saturday, July 25, from 9 a.m. to noon at Calvary Community Church, 7550 Cherry Park Drive — and it's a full-on send-off for CFISD families: free backpacks stuffed with supplies, books for the home shelf, school-appropriate clothes, games, and enough hot dogs, popcorn, and frozen treats to make a July morning bearable.
If you've been meaning to help, the clock is real: donations of backpacks, supplies, and clothing are being accepted through Wednesday, July 22 at two drop-off spots. "The purpose of this event is to provide backpacks and school supplies for financially strapped families," says outreach director Pat Hudson. Priority goes to registered pantry clients and low-income households — so a single backpack from you literally becomes a kid's first-day confidence.

Bridgeland's been hiding a burger stand that stays open till midnight
Consider this your public-service announcement: P. Terry's Burger Stand is open in Bridgeland — has been since April 27 — and if you haven't wandered in yet, you've been leaving hand-spun shakes on the table. You'll find it at Village Green at Bridgeland Central, 20103 Bridgeland Creek Parkway, doing the whole fresh-and-made-to-order thing with a 1950s roadside-stand attitude.
The menu leans exactly where you want it: Angus burgers, chicken and veggie versions, hand-cut fries, and those shakes — plus breakfast sandwiches for the early crowd, because it's open 7 a.m. to midnight. Yes, midnight. Which means the next time a 10 p.m. burger craving hits and everything else is dark, Bridgeland's got you.

Dolly Parton will mail your kid a book every month for exactly zero dollars
File this under "too good to skip": every child from birth to age 5 in the Greater Houston area can now get a free, age-appropriate book mailed to their door every single month — no income requirement, no catch — through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. "Once enrolled, each child receives a carefully selected, age-appropriate book in the mail every month at no cost to the family," the program promises.
The how is refreshingly simple: swing by a Harris County Public Library branch and enroll your little one in person. It's run locally in partnership with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Greater Houston and backed partly by a state library grant — which means a country legend and your neighborhood library just teamed up to build your toddler's bookshelf for free.

A constable, a commissioner, and a truckload of free snow cones
It sounds like the setup to a joke, but it's just a good morning in Cypress North. On Monday, August 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (or until the syrup runs dry), families can roll up for free snow cones behind the Barbara Bush Library at 6817 Cypresswood Drive — a last-lick-of-summer treat before backpacks take over.
The spread is courtesy of Constable Mark Herman's Precinct 4 team, Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey, and Sunny Daze, and it's as much a meet-your-neighbors moment as a sugar rush — deputies will be on hand to say hello. Bring the kids, beat the heat, and let someone else handle the cleanup for once.

The other back-to-school list — this one's built for the 50-and-up crowd
Back-to-school isn't just a kid thing this August. Lone Star College-CyFair's Academy for Lifelong Learning (ALL) — a whole slate of classes designed for the 50-and-over crowd — throws open its doors for an open house on August 12 from noon to 2 p.m. at the LSC-CyFair Conference Center. Think fresh subjects, new hobbies, and a room full of people who never bought the "too old to learn that" line.
Membership runs $25 for the year, and the open house is the low-pressure way to preview the fall lineup. Curious? Call 281.290.3460 or browse the schedule at LoneStar.edu/all. "This event is an opportunity to celebrate the changing season with new ideas and fresh perspectives" — and honestly, that beats another summer of reruns.

Six years running, Texas keeps handing Cy-Fair's art program the same trophy
At some point, it stops being luck. For the sixth consecutive year, CFISD's Visual Arts Program has been named a District of Distinction by the Texas Art Education Association — the state's stamp for programs that go well past the minimum. And Cy-Fair didn't squeak by: the district hit all 14 statewide performance indicators when only 12 were required, and cleared the bar on 11 of them by a mile.
The receipts are wild — students logged 316.5 volunteer hours against a 60-hour requirement and turned up at 26-plus contests and exhibitions. "Being recognized as a TAEA District of Distinction for the sixth consecutive year is an incredible honor and a testament to the dedication of our students, teachers, campus administrators and district leadership," said Visual Arts Coordinator Dr. Lee Carrier. Six-for-six — frame it.
