Good morning, Cypress. ☕ Here's the number nobody wanted to hear on a Sunday: 17. That's how many days of summer are left before the first bell rings — and if you have a kid, a calendar, and a shred of denial, today's the day it ends. The good news is that everything you need between now and then is in this issue: the tax-free weekend fine print, a laser studio betting on House Hahl, a Starbucks that isn't as close as it sounds, and a football team that waited sixteen years for one playoff game. ☀️ Today's weather: Cypress, we're running it back — 98° and mostly sunny, with the heat index topping out near 106° by mid-afternoon. There's a 20% chance a pop-up storm crashes the party after 4 p.m., which in Houston math means you'll either get soaked or watch it rain on somebody four streets over. Cue the collective sigh of relief from everyone who has ever sat through the West Road and Mason Road light: a Starbucks with a drive-thru is officially planned for 21910 West Road, tucked just east of the Texas Roadhouse that opened earlier this year. It's a 2,139-square-foot build with a roughly $400,000 price tag — modest money for what will absolutely become the busiest corner in your morning routine.

Now the part that keeps you honest: construction isn't scheduled to start until Oct. 26, with completion penciled in for Jan. 11, 2027. No opening date has been announced, so anyone telling you they'll be sipping a Cypress-made cold brew by Labor Day is guessing. File this one under "coming eventually," and keep your current coffee loyalty exactly where it is.

Sorry to be the ones holding the calendar, but here it is: CFISD students head back Wednesday, Aug. 12. That's the same day Katy and Klein go back, two days after Houston ISD, and — this is the part that will sting at every family reunion — a full six days before Tomball ISD, which doesn't start until Aug. 18. Somewhere in Tomball, a kid is reading this over your shoulder and smirking.

Seventeen days is enough time to do this well or do it in a panic. Between now and then: the sleep schedule needs walking back, the supply list needs printing, and the tax-free weekend (see below) lands Aug. 7–9 — five days before that first bell. Start with whichever one causes the most yelling in your house.

Texas runs its back-to-school sales tax holiday Friday, Aug. 7 through midnight Sunday, Aug. 9, and the headline rule is simple enough: clothing, shoes, backpacks and school supplies are tax-free as long as each item is priced under $100. Buy nine $40 shirts, pay no tax. Buy one $105 pair of cleats, pay tax on all of it.

Here's the trap nobody reads until it's too late — shipping and handling count toward that $100. A $94 backpack with $9 shipping is a $103 item in the state's eyes, and your savings evaporate at checkout. Pay the tax by accident anyway? You can chase a refund through the seller or file the Comptroller's Form 00-985. Or you could just watch the shipping line. We'd watch the shipping line.

PNC Bank has confirmed it's constructing a new full-service branch in Cypress — part of a $500 million national expansion that will add 300 locations across the country, Houston included. "At PNC, we know the importance of building deep local connections," said Alex Overstrom, the bank's head of retail banking, which is the kind of sentence banks say right before they decline to tell you anything specific.

And they didn't. No street address. No opening date. No completion timeline. For a company talking about deep local connections, the local part is currently a mystery — which, honestly, makes this the most suspenseful bank story we've ever run. We'll chase the address down and tell you the second we have it.

Cypress Lakes spent fifteen varsity seasons on the outside. In the sixteenth, the Spartans finally kicked the door in — 6-6 overall, 4-3 in District 16-6A, and a first-ever playoff berth that ended against College Park in the area round. For a program that had never seen November football, that's not a season. That's a founding document.

Which brings us to the uncomfortable part. Head coach Tyrone Carter, entering year three, has to replace 15 starters and find a new quarterback. The cupboard isn't bare — junior receiver Arquaris Crowder is back after 371 receiving yards, 6-foot-4, 260-pound junior tackle Chase Mayes is drawing Division I looks, and linebacker Ja'Merce Johnson returns after 54 tackles and 15 tackles for loss. Proving 2025 wasn't a fluke is a much harder trick than getting there was.

The Bears just landed at No. 25 in VYPE Houston's preseason volleyball rankings, which sounds like a compliment until you look at what's underneath it. Bridgeland went 29-14 last season, finished third in district, and advanced to the third round of the playoffs — and returns exactly five players from that group.

Coach Verena Khalil isn't pretending otherwise. "It will be a mostly new team with only five returners, so we will be relying on a quick offense to drive the speed of the game," she said, adding that the group has "great team chemistry, with everyone sharing the workload and wanting to contribute in their roles." Translation: they're going to play fast and figure it out in public. Get to a match early this fall — this is the kind of team that's either wildly fun or wildly frustrating, and you'll want to have seen the start of it either way.

Then Saturday, Aug. 1 turns into back-to-school day across the whole area: the Pearl Fincher Back to School Bash hands out 300 free books plus craft stations and art supplies (10 a.m.–2 p.m., 6815 Cypresswood Dr., Spring, free with RSVP), and Cy-Hope runs a school supply drive-thru starting at 9 a.m. at 12715 Telge Rd. — bring the student and a school ID, no pre-registration needed.
