Good morning, Cypress. ☀️ Monday's opening move is a triple-digit one, and the grid is already sweating with you — Texas broke its all-time power demand record last week and the heat advisory is lining up for tomorrow. The upside: Houston Restaurant Weeks kicks off Saturday with 19 spots on our side of town, there's a Dr. Seuss show two exits up Grant Road, and Andy's is quietly running peach cobbler custard until September. ☀️ Today's weather: Cypress, the storms packed up and left the heat behind. We're looking at a high near 100° under a sky that's basically all sun and no mercy, rain chances rounding to zero, and a heat index climbing to 107–110° by mid-afternoon. Tonight only backs off to 77°, which is less "cool down" and more "slightly less oven." No advisory is posted for today — forecasters expect one as soon as tomorrow — so treat this as the warm-up: outdoor work before 10 a.m., check the back seat every single time, and drink water before you're thirsty.

The list got bigger. Houston Restaurant Weeks runs Aug. 1 through Sept. 7, and Cypress, Cy-Fair and west Houston are fielding 19 participating restaurants this year — every prix-fixe meal sending a donation to the Houston Food Bank. Local names on the roster include Clay's Restaurant, Saltgrass Steak House in Cypress, two Sotos Cantina locations, and the pair that always shows up for this: Dario's Steakhouse & Seafood (14315 Cypress Rosehill Rd.) and Marvino's Italian Steakhouse (24002 Northwest Fwy.).

Dario's and Marvino's have already dropped their menus, which is the part that separates the planners from the people who show up Aug. 30 wondering where the tables went. Five weeks is a long runway — pick two, book them now, and let the rest of Houston fight over Saturday nights in September.

Last week the state's grid operator watched demand climb to roughly 90,000 megawatts, shattering the previous record of 85,508 MW set back in 2023. That is every air conditioner in Texas, including yours, leaning on the same wire at the same moment — and ERCOT held. Good. Now the follow-up.

The stormy stretch that gave us a break is over, and forecasters expect triple digits to settle in this week with a heat advisory possible as early as Tuesday as the heat index pushes past 108°. You know the drill better than we could explain it: shift the yard work to sunrise, never leave a kid or a dog in a parked car for "just a second," and check on the neighbor who insists they're fine without the AC on. Somewhere between the chains you already have memorized, Tinto's Cafe has been quietly pouring Colombian coffee at 8302 N. Eldridge Parkway, Ste. 210 — a Cy-Fair spot that opened back on May 31 and has mostly spread by word of mouth since. "Tinto" is what Colombians call the small black coffee you drink standing up, several times a day, without ceremony. That's the whole idea.

With seventeen days of summer left and the heat index at 110°, an air-conditioned theater is not a luxury — it's a strategy. Seussical the Musical opened Friday at Stageworks Theatre's Garza Mainstage, 10760 Grant Road, and runs through Aug. 16, stacking the Cat in the Hat, Horton, Gertrude McFuzz and the whole Jungle of Nool into one very loud, very colorful couple of hours.

It's built for the age range that has run out of things to do and started narrating it to you. Showtimes and ticket prices aren't posted in a form we could verify, so check with Stageworks directly before you load the car — but the run is long enough that you've got real flexibility on the date.

There is a deadline hiding inside the orange cones. Jersey Village crews are working Seattle Street, Singapore Lane, Crawford Street and Capri Drive simultaneously, and the city's stated goal is to have lanes open before school starts — which, as of this morning, is 16 days out. On Crawford, concrete went down west of Carlsbad with a four-day cure, roughly 200 linear feet of demo is done east of Carlsbad and about 300 feet remain. A new 16-inch water line goes in behind it.

The practical stuff: Capri Drive won't see construction until Crawford is completely finished, so if you live there, you have a little runway. Tahoe Drive has no timeline yet. And the city posts flyers the evening before your driveway access gets limited — so check the door before you assume you can get out in the morning. A man was killed in a house fire in the 9600 block of Maple Leaf Drive, near Zaka Road in northwest Harris County, after crews were called out around 10:05 a.m. Two other people made it out of the home and were hospitalized with smoke inhalation injuries. The Cy-Fair Fire Department, Cy-Fair Medic, the Harris County Sheriff's Office and the Harris County Fire Marshal's Office all responded, and the fire marshal is investigating the cause.

Our hearts are with his family and with the neighbors on that street. If you've been meaning to test the smoke alarms — the ones you keep telling yourself you'll get to — please do it today. It takes four minutes, and it is the single thing most likely to change how a morning like that one ends.

Somebody at Andy's Frozen Custard understood the assignment: late-summer peaches and key lime, folded into frozen custard, available through Sept. 8 and then gone until whenever they feel like it again. Peach cobbler and key lime pie, in the two forms that actually make sense when it's 100° outside.

Your nearest window is at 11450 Barker Cypress Road, open 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until midnight Friday and Saturday — which means the "we'll go tomorrow" excuse has almost no legs. Six weeks sounds like plenty of time. It is not. Ask anyone who missed the pumpkin one.
