Good morning, Cypress. ☀️ We've got a breakfast chain crossing state lines just to find us, a barbecue joint born out of the pandemic's worst year, a school-district wish-list fight parents are not letting go of quietly, and one 18-wheeler that turned Cunningham Road into a scrap yard. ☀️ Today's weather: Cypress, today is mostly sunny, stupid hot, and completely unbothered by your plans — high near 98°, heat index pushing 106°, with only a 20% chance of an afternoon shower or stray thunderstorm after 4 p.m. to break the monotony. We drop to a "cool" 78° overnight. Same drill as every day this month: water bottle within reach, car seats checked before every buckle-in, and outdoor chores wrapped up before the sun really means business.

Wild Eggs — the breakfast-and-brunch chain that's been packing dining rooms in Kentucky since 2007 — is making its very first Texas landing, and it's not in Austin or Dallas. It's landing at 9814 Fry Road in Cypress, with an opening targeted before the end of the year.

For a concept that's never crossed state lines before, choosing Cypress over every bigger, flashier Texas metro is a real vote of confidence in this corridor's appetite (and its brunch crowd's patience for a line). We'll take it as one more sign Fry Road is turning into the area's most contested strip of real estate.

Some Cy-Fair ISD teachers say they've been told they can no longer freely post their classroom supply wish lists online — the same lists parents have leaned on for years to help stock glue sticks, tissues, and the hundred other things a classroom budget never quite covers. "I'm not able to publicly post this. I can sometimes privately share it," one teacher told parent Aly Matei, describing the new limits in a string of DMs.

CFISD says it's not a ban — donation platforms like DonorsChoose and Amazon Classroom Wish List still work, but now need principal sign-off first, to make sure donated supplies stay at the campus they were meant for. The district's explanation is reasonable enough on paper; the problem is a lot of teachers say nobody told them the approval pathway exists, so what should be a two-step form has landed on parents as radio silence right as school-supply season kicks off.

When several of the area's beloved barbecue spots didn't survive the pandemic, Abel Nuncio and his wife Adriana didn't just mourn the smoke rings — they built Big Bertha Barbeque at 12512 FM 529, with friends volunteering their own skills in air conditioning, carpentry, and electrical work to help get the doors open back in 2019. Adriana traded the classroom for the smoker in 2021, retiring from a career teaching in CFISD to run it full-time.

Seven years and a pandemic later, it's still standing — smoked meats fresh daily, Monday through Saturday — which is about as good a résumé as a Cy-Fair kitchen can have. Consider this your reminder it's out there.

Harris County HAZMAT crews rolled out Tuesday evening after two large transformers fell off an 18-wheeler, shutting down part of Cunningham Road near Tanner Road. The Cy-Fair Fire Department confirmed the cargo spill and worked the scene into the night.

If your commute took a mystery detour through that stretch this week, now you know why — heavy equipment on a two-lane road has a way of ruining everyone's Tuesday at once. No injuries were reported in what we found, which is the best possible ending for a story that starts with "two transformers fell off a truck."

Cypress remains one of the fastest-expanding communities in the Houston region, and — surprising absolutely no one who's sat through a Barker Cypress backup — the roads have not kept pace with the rooftops. TxDOT and Harris County Precinct 3 are now advancing improvement plans for Fry Road and Barker Cypress Road, aiming to close the gap between how fast Cypress is building and how slowly it's been able to widen its way out of traffic.

It's the same growing-pains story behind yesterday's Skinner Road news, just playing out on a different stretch of asphalt — proof this isn't a one-road problem, it's a whole-corridor one.
