An 80-year-old Houston icon served its last plate this weekend — and the reason is sweet, not sad
The Barbecue Inn at 116 W. Crosstimbers closed permanently on Aug. 1 after 80 years — it opened in 1946, back when a drive to Crosstimbers was "going into town." No scandal, no rent dispute, no chain buyout: owner Wayne Skrehot is simply retiring, and after eight decades of fried chicken and barbecue, the man has earned the recliner.
It's a bit outside our usual Cy-Fair patch, but institutions like this one belong to the whole city. If you ever waited in that line for the fried chicken, consider this your permission to be a little sentimental at lunch today.

Can't afford a doctor? Harris County just built you a search engine
For every neighbor who's ever put off a checkup because the price tag was a mystery, Harris County quietly shipped something useful: a new online Low-Cost Clinic Finder that helps residents locate affordable healthcare, sort out eligibility requirements, and navigate the region's maze of providers from one starting point.

Turns out the fix for deputies quitting was money — turnover just fell by half
New numbers out of Commissioner Lesley Briones' office say the pay-parity investment Commissioners Court approved in May 2025 has cut law enforcement turnover by more than 50%, while boosting both retention and recruitment across Harris County agencies. Briones and law enforcement leaders rolled out the data late last week.
File this under "incentives work": pay people competitively and they stay. For Cy-Fair, fewer deputies walking out the door means more experienced patrols staying on our roads — the kind of boring-sounding win that actually shows up in response times.

Eight days to the first bell — the parent playbook nobody hands you
CFISD's first day is Wednesday, Aug. 12 — eight days out — and Hello Cypress just published the getting-ready checklist worth actually reading: start walking bedtimes and wake-ups back toward school hours now (not Sunday the 11th), knock out the supply list, and rebuild the morning routine before it counts.

A Cypress mother escaped captivity — and a reminder every neighbor should keep close
A Cypress man is being held without bond after investigators say he kidnapped the mother of his children, handcuffed her, and kept her locked inside a closet for an extended period before she managed to escape. She is safe, and the case is now in the courts.
