When you watched the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy or this summer's FIFA World Cup, there's a decent chance you were looking through the lens of a Cypress Falls Golden Eagle. Ryan Schmidt, class of 2007, spent 32 days shooting the Olympics for NBC and worked 16 World Cup matches for Fox — on top of nine seasons with ESPN, eight college football national championships, a Super Bowl, and Final Fours.
His resume reads like a sports fan's bucket list, but Schmidt credits Cy Falls — band, National Honor Society, Key Club — for the networking and time-management chops that got him there. "Olympics, World Cup, there's not a whole lot bigger stage that you can be on for sure," he says. Not bad for a kid from our side of 290.

The Texans' Cypress mega-project was billed at $150 million — the county's own engineer says try $250 million
13 Investigates pulled the receipts on the Toro District, the 83-acre Texans headquarters-plus-everything development coming to Bridgeland, and the math is getting spicy. The deal: Harris County donates roughly 24 acres and leases them back to the Texans at a nominal rate (goodbye, property taxes on those facilities), plus a special tax zone funding $150 million in public parking garages and another $26 million for roads — and the county's own engineering director has warned the total could climb to $250 million.
A Rice University sports finance expert asked the question we're all thinking: "What happens if the parking garage costs $200 million instead of $150 million?" Meanwhile, a county compliance officer's email said the developer "did not deliver" on promised benefits. The first phase — training facility, fieldhouse, hotel, and 325 apartments — is slated for 2029. Worth watching where every dollar lands between now and then.

Both giant ice cream cones just went dark — Twistee Treat is done with Texas
The buildings shaped like giant soft-serve cones — 7018 Fry Road in Cypress and 9730 Jones Road — are boarded up with plywood, and Twistee Treat's website now lists only its 37 Florida locations. Both Texas shops closed in July with zero explanation from the Florida-based chain, ending a run that started here in 2017.
Twenty-one flavors, drive-thru sundaes, and a building you could spot from a quarter mile away — gone just as August hit 98°. The timing, frankly, feels personal. One week after a UAE coffee franchise landed on 290, Canada is answering. Tim Hortons — the double-double institution with more than 5,000 locations in over a dozen countries — has set its grand opening for Friday, Aug. 28 at 11430 Barker Cypress Road. Donuts, iced coffee, protein lattes, bagels: the whole northern playbook.
Cypress's coffee scene has quietly become an international arrivals terminal, and we are extremely here for it. The real question is whether Timbits hit different at 98 degrees. Circle the 28th and find out — grand openings at donut chains have a way of involving free things.

60 more acres of the Katy Prairie just became bulldozer-proof — forever
While northwest Harris County sprouts rooftops at record pace, the Coastal Prairie Conservancy just moved 60 acres in the Upper Cypress Creek watershed permanently off the table — native grassland, seasonal wetlands, and ponds that host migratory birds, monarchs, bobwhite quail, bald eagles, and a state-threatened hawk or two. The conservancy has now protected nearly 20,000 acres of the Katy Prairie Preserve, chasing a 30,000-acre goal.
Here's the part that matters even if you've never birdwatched in your life: prairie wetlands hold and slow stormwater instead of letting it sprint across pavement toward your street. "Conservation happens one project at a time," says CEO Mary Anne Piacentini. Sixty acres at a time works for us.

Wanted: grown-ups willing to ride the school bus (seriously, CFISD is asking)
For a kindergartner, that first bus ride home is a solo mission into the unknown — so CFISD is recruiting Bus Buddies: volunteers who ride afternoon elementary routes on the first two days of school, Wednesday, Aug. 12 and Thursday, Aug. 13, making sure the littlest riders get off at the right stop. No special skills required — the district's pitch is "a heart for kids and a couple hours to spare."

Advanced Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine just took home the Houston Chronicle's Best of the Best award for Best Orthopaedic Center — for the sixth consecutive year. At this point it's less an award and more a standing reservation.
