Monday at 6 p.m., the Cy-Fair ISD board stops talking and starts voting. On the table: a $1.63 billion bond package and a voter-approved tax rate election, both aimed at the Nov. 3 ballot. Before the vote there's a public hearing on a proposed rate of $1.1569 per $100 of property value — the kind of number that sounds like nothing until you multiply it by your appraisal. If it passes, the district picks up roughly $103 million a year against a projected $80.9 million shortfall for 2026-27.

Here's what the bond actually buys: $1.3 billion for schools and buses, $256 million for technology, $60.8 million for stadiums, and $20.1 million for swimming facilities. Trustees discussed all of it at the Aug. 6 work session without taking a vote — that part happens tomorrow, in the boardroom at the Mark Henry Administration Building, 11440 Matzke Road, with a livestream if you'd rather watch in pajamas. Two things get decided in that room: what the district asks for, and what you get to say yes or no to in eleven weeks.

You bought the backpack. You labeled the folders. Now go find the shot record, because Harris County Public Health is spending National Immunization Awareness Month reminding parents that Texas doesn't care how nice the folders are. Seventh graders in particular have a new hurdle: a meningococcal vaccine plus an age-appropriate Tdap or Td booster, on top of everything they already needed in elementary.

If cost is the wall, it shouldn't be. Texas Vaccines for Children covers kids from birth through age 18 who are uninsured, on Medicaid or CHIP, American Indian or Alaska Native, or underinsured in certain cases — and adults 19 and up who qualify have the Adult Safety Net program. Appointments at a Harris County Public Health location run through 832-927-7350. Wednesday morning is a bad time to discover a missing signature.

Good news first: on the spring 2026 STAAR science exams — given only in fifth and eighth grade — Cy-Fair students outscored the state average in both grades. That's the whole tested science pipeline, and the district cleared it. Somewhere there's a fifth-grade teacher who has earned a very long Sunday.

Now the part that goes on the fridge with a frown: CFISD's third- and eighth-grade math scores dipped below the state average. Same district, same kids, same year — different subject. Individual results are sitting at texasassessment.gov behind your student's unique access code, which is a nice thing to look up before Wednesday rather than in October at a conference table.

An abdominal aortic aneurysm is a weak spot in the body's main artery, and repairing one is the kind of operation that historically came with a drive downtown, a hotel room for your family, and a lot of Medical Center parking garage. St. Luke's Health–The Vintage Hospital just completed its first one, led by Nidal Buheis, MD.

“This procedure, led by Nidal Buheis, MD, means our neighbors no longer need to travel far for this critical cardiovascular surgery,” the hospital said in announcing it. Hospital president Elizabeth Ortega called it proof of “our deep commitment to offering the very best, most advanced medical care right here where our community lives and thrives.” One repair isn't a cardiovascular program — but it's the first brick, and it got laid on this side of the Beltway.

Harris County Commissioners Court spent Aug. 6 doing the least glamorous and most consequential thing government does: deciding who pays. County Judge Lina Hidalgo floated roughly one additional penny on the tax rate — about $66 million a year — earmarked for programs including Early REACH and child care workforce investment. Commissioner Tom Ramsey pushed back, framing the penny inside a county budget already under pressure. Nobody won that argument on Thursday. They rarely do.

What did pass, unanimously, was a $15.4 million construction contract for Stage B of the Bear Creek Village drainage project, benefiting roughly 2,300 homes. Commissioner Lesley Briones noted that more than 1,300 Bear Creek Village homes flooded during Harvey. Also approved: a roughly $2 million agreement with Archistar to automate permitting and platting, running Aug. 6, 2026 through Aug. 5, 2028 — which, if it works, means the next person building a garage apartment waits days instead of months.

CFISD dropped four academic all-district lists on Aug. 6 and the numbers are ridiculous: 163 softball players, more than 300 soccer players, over 220 tennis players, and about 133 student athletic trainers. Every one of them carried a composite weighted GPA of 5.5 or higher through the two grading periods covering most of their season. Not “during the offseason.” During it.

The trainers are the ones worth pausing on. Cypress Ranch alone put 33 student trainers on the list, Cypress Woods 26, Cypress Lakes 24 — kids who spend games in the heat handling other people's injuries and then go home and out-study most of the building. If your teenager has been complaining that nobody notices the unglamorous jobs, forward them this paragraph.

Mark it: Cy-Fair football opens the season Aug. 27-29 at the Berry Center complex, 8877 Barker Cypress Rd. Thursday the 27th at 6:30 p.m. it's Cypress Lakes vs. Katy Freeman and Cypress Woods vs. Katy Jordan. Friday the 28th at 7 p.m., Cypress Park vs. Alief Hastings and Cypress Ridge vs. Aldine MacArthur. Saturday the 29th at 6 p.m., Cypress Springs vs. College Station and Cy-Fair vs. Tomball Memorial.

Now the part that saves your evening: those are two different stadiums on the same campus. The first game listed each night is at Cy-Fair FCU Stadium; the second is at Pridgeon Stadium. Every year somebody walks confidently through the wrong gate, hears the wrong fight song, and has to jog across a parking lot in August. Don't be that neighbor. Screenshot this.
