Good morning, Cypress. ☕ Two days into the school year and the thermometer has already staged a coup — 97 degrees, a heat index of 110, and afternoon storms lurking like a kid who "forgot" his homework. Today: our fire chief just won the biggest award in American firefighting, 25 miles of sidewalk appeared right when 114,000 kids needed them, and the saddest empty building on Highway 6 finally has a tenant. 🔥 Today's weather: Cypress, the sky is running a two-act play today. Act one is mostly sunny, deceptively pleasant, and over by lunch. Act two brings a high of 97° that feels like 110°, plus a 20–50% shot at showers and thunderstorms rolling in after 1 p.m. — enough to soak a pickup line, not enough to bet on. No heat advisory is posted, but only because a south breeze at 5 to 10 mph is doing heroic work. Freeze the water bottles, park in the shade, and if you're headed to a Friday-night patio, keep one eye on the radar. Tonight bottoms out at a balmy 79°, and Saturday goes drier and hotter at 98°.

On Tuesday in Kansas City, the International Association of Fire Chiefs handed its 2026 Career Fire Chief of the Year award to Amy Ramon — the chief of the Cy-Fair Fire Department, the one whose engines you pull over for on Barker Cypress. Thirty-plus years in the service, chief since 2014, and already the first woman to win Texas Fire Chief of the Year. Now she's got the national one too.

The thing worth knowing isn't the trophy, it's what she built to earn it: a department covering roughly 600,000 residents, and a behavioral health program for her own crews that 54% of them actually use — a staggering number in a profession that historically preferred to just not talk about it. Next time you're annoyed at a fire truck blocking Huffmeister, remember it's being driven by the best-run department in the country.

Government projects are famous for landing three years late and $2 million over. This one landed on a Thursday in August with kids already in the building. Harris County Precinct 4 threw a ribbon party at McFee Elementary on Aug. 13 to mark 25 new miles of sidewalk, which means all 26 CFISD campuses inside Precinct 4 are now reachable on foot without walking in a ditch.

Here's the number that makes it more than a photo op: 79 pedestrians have been hit by vehicles in Cypress since 2021, and 10 of them died. Commissioner Lesley Briones' Sidewalks 4 Precinct 4 program has now laid 80 miles since March 2024, along with 119 crosswalks and 35 intersection upgrades. Another 4.5 miles connecting Truitt Middle and Horne Elementary is next. Five of the new miles are near Greenhouse Road — go look before the grass grows over the seams.

Michael Urban was up before sunrise Wednesday for the first day of his junior year at Jersey Village High. Somewhere across town, the adults were doing math with a lot more zeros: a $67.4 million deficit, a 12-cent tax rate increase worth about $103 million, and a $1.63 billion bond split into four propositions — all of it landing on your November ballot 48 hours before the first bell rang.

The Houston Press went looking for what that actually feels like at 7:15 a.m. in a hallway, and the answer is mostly: it doesn't, yet. Kids are worried about lockers and lunch. Trustee Christine Kalmbach cast the lone no vote. The gap between those two experiences — a junior's first-day nerves and a nine-figure funding hole — is the whole story of public school in 2026, and you get to weigh in on it in about eleven weeks.

The old Fuddruckers at 7250 Highway 6 North has been sitting dark since 2024, doing that thing empty restaurants do where they slowly become a landmark for giving directions. That ends this fall: Applebee's Neighborhood Grill + Bar has confirmed it's taking the 5,714-square-foot space, with franchisee Nazarian Global Enterprises behind the build.

No opening date yet, just "fall." We'll take it — not because riblets are a culinary event, but because a lit-up parking lot on that stretch of Highway 6 beats another year of Copperfield's most depressing vacancy. The Touchdown Club of Houston released its 2026 Public School Preseason Team this week, and Cypress Ranch QB Braden Baker is on it. That's the whole Houston metro — every public school, every district — and a Mustang made the list before the season has even kicked off.

Preseason honors are a promise, not a receipt, which is exactly what makes them fun: now everybody in the district knows the name, and every defense he faces has it circled. Honorees get feted at the Touchdowner of the Year Dinner on Wednesday, Aug. 19 at the Bayou City Event Center. Friday nights start in earnest Aug. 27.

Aristoi Classical Academy has been running its Cypress campus out of borrowed space at Crossover Bible Fellowship since 2020. On Aug. 12, families walked into a building that finally belongs to the school: a permanent campus at 13631 Ardfield Drive, with upgraded classrooms and — the part the kids care about — an actual gymnasium.

It's a tuition-free public charter running K–11 right now, adding 12th grade next year, led by headmaster Mark Pertuso. Six years is a long time to be a good tenant while waiting for a home. Anyone who's ever hosted Thanksgiving in an apartment understands exactly what this week felt like for them.

Cypress apparently declared this Melon and Berry Weekend without telling anyone, because the Fairfield Melon & Berry Festival runs Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 15103 Mason Rd., free — a second helping for anyone who overcommits Saturday. Monday the Cy-Fair Chamber cuts the ribbon on Wallis Bank, 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. at 12907 FM 1960 W. Tuesday brings the Chamber's General Membership Luncheon at the Berry Center, 11:30 a.m., $35 for members who reserved and $45 if you're not one yet — followed Wednesday by the free Non-Profit Roundtable at 9 a.m., 16712 Huffmeister Rd.
