Good morning, Cypress. ☕ It's melon weekend, it's 99 degrees, and the state of Texas just handed out report cards to the people who hand out report cards. Today: Cy-Fair's new TEA grade and the three high schools that pulled an A, an Apple factory that quietly opened eight minutes from Jersey Village, and a Tomball cul-de-sac where thirty minutes of rain reaches the porch. Let's go. 👇

🔥 Today's weather: Cypress, there is no plot twist today. Sunny, 99°, a heat index of 109, and a rain chance the National Weather Service lists at a flat, unbothered zero percent — not "slight," not "isolated," zero. A south wind of 5 to 10 mph picks up to 15 with gusts to 20 this evening, which is the only mercy on the menu. There's no heat advisory posted, which at 109 feels less like good news and more like the state shrugging. Tonight falls to 75° and mostly clear. Sunday runs it back at 99°, and then Monday through Thursday sits at 100 to 101 with indices near 110. Our next real rain chance is Friday. Do the yard work now or don't do it at all.

TEA released the 2026 A-F accountability ratings on Thursday, and Cypress-Fairbanks ISD came back a B with an overall score of 86 — one point better than last year's B/85. Underneath that: Student Achievement B/83, School Progress B/86, Closing the Gaps B/85. Not a victory lap. Not a crisis. A district of 114,000 kids nudging the needle in the right direction, which is harder than it sounds at that size.

The campus list is where it gets local. Bridgeland, Cypress Ranch and Cypress Woods all pulled A's. So did seven middle schools — Anthony, Goodson, Hamilton, Salyards, Smith, Spillane and Sprague — and more than twenty elementaries. The number worth putting on the refrigerator: CFISD had no D-rated and no F-rated campuses. Every other school landed a B or a C. Look up yours, then remember this is the same district asking you for a tax increase and $1.63 billion in November. Both facts are now on the table.

On Wednesday, Aug. 13, Apple opened a 20,000-square-foot Advanced Manufacturing Center at 8718 Fairbanks N. Houston Road — a building most of you have driven past on the way to Sam Houston Race Park without giving it a thought. It sits on the campus already building Apple's advanced AI servers, and later this year it starts producing the Mac mini, the first one ever made in the United States.

Tim Cook said Apple put "hundreds of millions of dollars" into the Houston facility in under nine months, and called the center a place "where businesses, workers, and students can learn the same innovative processes that we use to make Apple's most groundbreaking products." Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick turned up for it too. One honest caveat before anyone updates a résumé: Apple has not released a Houston-specific job number — the "thousands of jobs" language is national. What's local and certain is this: the machine on your desk in 2027 may well have been born off Fairbanks N. Houston Road.

Most hospital awards are wallpaper. This one is a stopwatch. Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital landed on the American Heart Association's Get With The Guidelines–Stroke Gold Plus list and the Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite tier, which is earned by getting clot-busting treatment into a patient's arm faster than a set clock — not by having a nice brochure. It also made the Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll.

"Stroke is a medical emergency and every second matters," said Sandi Shaw, Memorial Hermann's system stroke program director, and that is the entire point of the award. Here's the practical takeaway, and it's the reason we're running this: if someone's face droops, an arm drifts down, or their speech goes sideways, call 911 — do not drive them yourself. The ambulance starts the clock the hospital is being graded on. Knowing the good stroke center is fifteen minutes away is only useful if you get there the right way.

Every Sunday, Church Story sets up and tears down inside Grand Lakes Junior High near Cypress Rosehill Road and the Grand Parkway — two services, 9 and 10:30 a.m., and everything they own goes back in a trailer afterward. That era has an expiration date now. They're building a permanent home on Cypress Heights Drive with room for 1,200 people.

The plans include age-specific space for infants through sixth grade and a dedicated special-needs ministry, which tells you who they're actually building for. Groundbreaking is expected within a couple of months; the doors don't open until fall 2027. That's a long wait for a congregation that has been folding chairs for years — but anyone who has ever loaded a church into a trailer at noon on a Sunday understands exactly what they're counting down to.

It rained for half an hour in Tomball on a Tuesday night, and by the time it stopped, a cul-de-sac was a pond. "It was pouring down. But then within 30 minutes, the whole street was so flooded it was on the porch," resident Brittany Anderson told ABC13. Neighbor Nick Wisniewski put it plainer: cars flooded out. Residents say this is not new — it has been happening for decades.

The city's answer is the Lovett/Carrell Drainage Project, a $14 million-plus fix that Tomball Public Works says will be fully designed by spring 2027. Read that again: designed. Not built, not breaking ground — the drawings will be finished in about nineteen months. We're publishing this on a 99-degree day with a zero percent rain chance, which is exactly when a drainage story is easiest to ignore and hardest to fix. Bookmark it for the first week it rains sideways.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office runs 20 Flock networks totaling roughly 480 license plate reader cameras, on a county contract worth about $868,975. They photograph plates, log where and when, and make that searchable by law enforcement. On Friday, after a USA Today reporter asked the agency about three deputies' "potentially questionable" searches, HCSO announced new guardrails on the system.

Two changes: an auditing tool that flags suspicious searches, and a mandatory descriptive case code — meaning a deputy now has to state, on the record, which case a plate lookup belongs to. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez put it bluntly: "Any deputy who abuses the public trust will be held fully accountable, both professionally and criminally." To be precise, because precision matters here: the three deputies are under review, and no determination of wrongdoing has been announced. The technology isn't going anywhere. The question was always who's watching the watchers, and this week the answer got a little more specific.
