Good morning, neighbors. ☕ Yesterday was the two-year mark on the worst thing that has ever happened on Plains River Drive, and the FBI marked it by doubling the reward — so we're leading there, and we're leading soberly. After that: the all-day county meeting that produced a $178 million problem and zero decisions, a preseason poll that just put a target on Cy-Fair's back, and a Saturday next month that's going to make you choose between two marketplaces. 🥵 Today's weather: Sunny and 99°, heat index topping out near 106, rain chance zero, wind southwest at 5–10. Tonight is mostly clear and 77°. There is no heat advisory posted for Harris County — the National Weather Service says it is watching as the index creeps toward 106–108, and dew points are the only thing keeping us under the line. Now the part we have to walk back: that 20 percent rain chance we gave you for Saturday has evaporated. The board now reads 99 Thursday, 100 Friday, 102 Saturday, 101 Sunday and Monday, 100 Tuesday — with zero percent on every single day. Nothing in the Gulf, nothing in the Atlantic, nothing the hurricane center is even watching. Front-load the outdoor stuff before 10 a.m. and check on the neighbors who ration the A/C.

Yesterday was Aug. 18 — two years to the day since Kelly Masciarelli, Kolin Foster and Cameryn Richard were killed and their home in the 14600 block of Plains River Drive was set on fire. Nobody has been arrested. For the families, the calendar page turning is not a milestone. It is just another year of the same question.

The FBI has raised its reward to up to $50,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of whoever is responsible — double the $25,000 it offered in February 2025. What investigators have is thin and specific: a man described as tall with a muscular build, and a dark four-door sedan, blue or black, with a distinctively low third brake light. If you lived near Plains River Drive in August 2024, if you have dashcam or doorbell footage from that week still sitting on a drive, if you remember a car like that — that is the whole ballgame. Just after 6:25 p.m. Sunday, a gold 2008 Kia Rio traveling in the 4600 block of Highway 6 North near Cairnway left the roadway to the northeast, crossed into a private parking lot and struck a concrete pillar. The driver, Jessica Esparza, died at the scene. A 13-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl were flown by LifeFlight with injuries the Harris County Sheriff's Office described as life-threatening.

A witness told deputies the car was moving at a high rate of speed. The investigation is still open, and there has been no public update on the two children since Sunday night. That stretch of Highway 6 is one most of us drive without a second thought, which is the only reason worth mentioning it at all. Monday we told you Harris County Commissioners Court was meeting to work through five separate tax rates. They met. They talked for hours. And in the words of one report, it was all discussion — lots of numbers and lots of scenarios — but no final decision was reached.

Here is what is still true: the general fund is $178 million short, and the tax increase on the table would run a median homestead about $90 a year — roughly $97 once the flood control district's piece is added. Around $300 million of the pressure comes from pay raises, including the $305,000 constable salaries we flagged earlier this month. The number now gets picked on Sept. 8, when commissioners take up the formal tax-rate proposal. So the meeting that was going to settle it bought everyone three more weeks — which, if you were planning to show up and say something, is three more weeks you did not know you had.

Cypress Creek F.A.C.E. is turning 30, and if the name does not register, the math might: three decades of putting professional musicians on a stage at The Centrum, 6823 Cypresswood Drive so Northwest Houston families did not have to make the drive downtown, find parking and pay downtown prices to hear them. Bob Schefferine steps in as the new executive director for the anniversary season.

The 2026–27 Star-Lit! series runs six shows from October through May, and the lineup is not shy: The Texas Tenors, Forever Motown, The Lovin' Spoonful, Take 6, Asleep at the Wheel and 10,000 Maniacs. There is a nine-show Promenade series running alongside it. Thirty years is long enough that some of you were taken to your first live concert in that room by a parent — and are now old enough to be the one buying the tickets.

District 16-6A is eight teams, and seven of them have Cypress in the name: Cy-Fair, Cypress Falls, Cypress Lakes, Langham Creek, Cypress Woods, Cypress Creek, Cypress Ridge — and Jersey Village. VYPE's preseason preview went ahead and picked one to win it: the Cy-Fair Bobcats.

The other name to know before Aug. 27 is Jhadyn Nelson of Langham Creek, tapped as the district's preseason MVP, with Sean Riegler, Kaden McCarty and Ezekiel Ayangbile also singled out. Preseason polls are, of course, worth exactly nothing on a Friday night in October. But they are worth a great deal in a group text in August, so consider this your ammunition.

Drybar — the blowout bar, no cuts, no color, just the blowout — opens in Bridgeland at 20115 Bridgeland Creek Parkway, Suite 200. There is a private grand-opening event and ribbon cutting with Howard Hughes tomorrow, Aug. 20, and the doors open to the rest of us Friday, Aug. 21. Owner Anne Evers is running it, and it is the fifth Drybar in greater Houston.

Six days later, Onyx Nail Bar holds its soft opening in Elyson Town Center on Aug. 26, adding brow treatments, lash services and facials to the mix. Two years ago the running joke about Elyson and Bridgeland was that you had a beautiful house and nowhere to walk to. That joke is aging badly, and quickly.

Mark Saturday, Sept. 12 and then figure out your route, because Cy-Fair is running two markets that day. The Cy-Fair Women's Club brings Shop 'til You Drop back to the Berry Center, 8877 Barker Cypress Rd., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with more than 275 vendors, free admission and free parking — proceeds go to student scholarships and charitable grants. Last year's edition put $40,000 into scholarships and another $40,000 into nonprofit grants.

The same morning, the Cy-Fair Chamber runs a Market Day at the Four Points by Sheraton Houston West from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. — and here is the part for the business owners on this list: the booths are free. Small businesses, local vendors and entrepreneurs can claim complimentary space, with a registration deadline of Sept. 4. Contact Jacquelyn Tatum at 713-248-4751. A free booth in front of a room of neighbors is the cheapest marketing anyone will offer you this year.

Friday the Drybar doors open to everyone in Bridgeland, Cypress Stage tickets go on sale for its October run of Gloria: A Life, and there is live music on the Boardwalk at Towne Lake starting at 6:30 p.m. Saturday is the busy one: Harris County Precinct 4's free “Are You Ready? For a Disaster” preparedness workshop at 8:30 a.m. at the Richard & Meg Weekley Community Center, 8440 Greenhouse Rd.; the Tuckerton Village Farmers Market, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. at 9620 Fry Rd.; and the Cy-Fair Lions youth football End of Summer Carnival, noon–4 p.m. at 7220 Westgreen Blvd. Sunday the Cypress farmers market is back at Lakeland Village Center, 10519 Fry Rd., 12:30–3:30 p.m. — second and fourth Sundays, so this is a yes week. And Tuesday the Tomball Chamber holds its free Health & Wellness Quarterly Luncheon at 11 a.m. at the Beckendorf Conference Center, LSC-Tomball.

That is your Wednesday Scoop. It opened heavy, and there is no clever way around that — two years is a long time to go without an answer, and Sunday's crash is the kind of thing that makes you drive Highway 6 differently for a week. One ask: if you were anywhere near Plains River Drive in August 2024, or you know someone who was, forward this to them. Dashcam footage nobody thought was important is exactly how cases like this break, and $50,000 is the FBI saying out loud that they still believe somebody out there knows.
