Today’s stories

Cy-Fair ISD is staring down a $67.4 million budget shortfall

Cy-Fair ISD is projecting a $67.4 million shortfall for the 2026–27 fiscal year, Chief Financial Officer Karen Smith told trustees at a May 21 budget workshop. District leaders frame it as a revenue problem, not overspending — the result of shrinking enrollment, unfunded state mandates, and years of inflation that funding formulas never caught up with.

To close the gap, Superintendent Doug Killian has floated a voter-approved tax rate election (VATRE) that could raise the maintenance-and-operations rate by up to 12 cents. Without new revenue, the district says it would have to look at cutting programs and staff. The board has tentatively backed a $500 one-time employee stipend and higher health-insurance contributions in the proposed budget.

Why it matters here: with a possible tax-rate vote on the horizon, this is the budget conversation that could land on your ballot — and in your classrooms — later this year.

Free summer meals for kids return to Cy-Fair in June

With the last bell of the year ringing tomorrow, Cy-Fair ISD’s Summer Meals Program is back to help keep local kids fed over the break. Starting in June, Cy-Fair Nutrition Services will serve free breakfast and lunch to any child 18 or younger — no ID, no registration, and no CFISD enrollment required. Students with disabilities can take part through age 21.

Meals are served Monday through Thursday at campuses across Cypress, Jersey Village, and northwest Harris County, with dates and times varying by site. The program is funded by the USDA and run statewide through the Texas Department of Agriculture, which notes that more than one in five Texas children faces food insecurity.

Why it matters here: summer can be the toughest stretch of the year for families who lean on school meals — this fills the gap, close to home, at no cost.

EōS Fitness opens a 45,000-sq-ft gym in Cy-Fair

EōS Fitness has opened a new full-service location at the West 8 Crossing shopping center in Cy-Fair, the company announced this week. The 45,000-square-foot club includes a nearly 4,000-square-foot indoor pool, plus a “cardio theatre” where members can watch big-screen movies while they work out and a dedicated, camera-friendly space for content creators.

Why it matters here: it’s a sizable new fitness option close to home just as summer-workout season gets going.

Jersey Village expects to end the year with a $12.09M cushion

The city of Jersey Village is on track to close out fiscal year 2025–26 with a projected $12.09 million fund balance, City Manager Austin Bleess reported at a May 18 special meeting. The city plans to move $1.4 million from the general fund into its Capital Improvement Program.

That money will go toward Phase 1 of the City Campus project, which focuses on upgrades to the administration buildings, public works, and the lobby.

Why it matters here: a healthy reserve gives Jersey Village room to invest in city facilities without leaning on residents for more.
