What's happening today and tomorrow

A few things worth adding to the calendar for today and the rest of the week.

Wednesday, June 3

Thursday, June 4

Looking ahead

This weekend has a lot going on. Friday evening, live music from Jonah Miles hits The Boardwalk (6:30–9:30 PM, free). Saturday is a big one: the Inaugural Boardwalk Boat Show runs 11 AM–3 PM (free — Ron Hoover boats, live music, waterfront restaurant specials), and it's also statewide Free Fishing Day, making Deputy Darren Goforth Park an easy family outing with no license required. Sunday morning, Cypress Cars & Coffee rolls out 8–10 AM (free, all welcome).

Today's stories

A regional water milestone: surface water reaches West Harris County

For the first time, surface water from the Gulf Coast Water Authority is flowing to homes and businesses across West Harris County. The Central Pump Station went live on June 2, marking a long-planned shift away from near-total dependence on groundwater — a shift designed to slow land subsidence and keep pace with the area's rapid growth.

Cypress sits in one of the fastest-sinking stretches of Harris County, and converting to surface water is a cornerstone of the Harris-Galveston Subsidence District's plan to protect the ground — and the homes built on it — for decades to come. It's the kind of infrastructure story you feel in your foundation long before you notice it at the tap.

Mail theft and check washing are on the rise in Cypress North

Thieves are targeting mailboxes in Cypress North with a scheme called check washing — they steal outgoing mail, chemically erase the ink on personal checks, and rewrite them to themselves. Residents are being urged to drop outgoing mail at the post office or in USPS blue collection boxes rather than leaving checks in their home mailboxes.

Why it matters here: check washing victims often don't realize the fraud has happened until weeks later, when the money is already gone. A few simple habits help — sign up for USPS Informed Delivery, switch to electronic bill pay when possible, and report missing mail promptly to local law enforcement and your postmaster.

Free Fishing Day is this Saturday — and Cypress has the perfect spot

This Saturday, June 6, Texas Parks & Wildlife waives the fishing license requirement for everyone statewide. The local pick: Deputy Darren Goforth Park along Cypress Creek, a Harris County Precinct 4 park with easy waterway access and family-friendly grounds.

It's one of two license-free fishing days Texas offers each year, and a popular one for families introducing kids to the sport. Bring your own gear, sunscreen, and snacks — and plan to arrive before the summer heat peaks mid-morning.

Petra Cares opens its Cypress training center for foster youth

Petra Cares has opened the doors on its new Cypress automotive training facility, giving foster youth and young adults aging out of the system a hands-on path into a career. The nonprofit pairs technical skills training with life coaching and job placement support — all under one roof on the northwest side.

Why it matters here: young adults aging out of foster care are among the most economically vulnerable people in the country. Petra Cares is betting that a professional skill — and a real support network — can change that trajectory right here in Cypress.
