Today's stories
The Backyard Grill celebrates 25 years in Cy-Fair
For 25 years, The Backyard Grill on Jones Road has been a Cy-Fair staple, and the family-owned restaurant is marking the milestone with an anniversary party on June 26. Known for a sprawling menu of nearly 100 items — burgers, chicken-fried steaks, sandwiches — plus 48 beers on tap, it's the kind of neighborhood spot that's fed a lot of birthdays and Little League teams over the years.
At the party, the restaurant says it'll give away $100 gift cards every hour to random tables of loyalty members. Why it matters here: A quarter-century is a long run for any independent restaurant, and The Backyard Grill's anniversary is a nice reminder of the local businesses that give Cy-Fair its flavor.

Houston Cosmetic Surgery Center now open in Cypress
Houston Cosmetic Surgery Center has opened a new location in Cypress, at 22215 Cypresswood Drive, Ste. 113. The practice, which also has an office in Vintage Park, opened the Cypress location on May 14.
Services range from facelifts and rhinoplasty to hormone replacement therapy, according to the practice. Why it matters here: It's another sign of the steady build-out of medical and personal-care businesses along the Cypresswood corridor, giving neighbors more options close to home.

Duck N Bao closes its original Cypress location
Duck N Bao, the Sichuan restaurant that founders Grace and Leo Xia opened on Spring Cypress Road in 2020, has closed its original Cypress location as of June 1. The restaurant shared the news on its social media accounts.
The good news for fans: the group's two inner-loop locations, in Rice Village and Memorial, remain open and serving the house-made dumplings, Peking duck, and noodles that built its following. Why it matters here: Cypress helped launch a homegrown Houston success story, and while the original storefront is closing, the brand it started here lives on.

Cy-Fair nonprofits launch back-to-school backpack drives
Summer just started, but two Cy-Fair nonprofits are already gearing up for the 2026–27 school year. Cy-Fair Helping Hands is collecting backpacks and supplies through July 22, leading up to its Back-to-School Bash on July 25 at Calvary Community Church, while Cypress Assistance Ministries (CAM) will hold a free drive-thru backpack distribution on Aug. 1.
The need is real — about 58.9% of CFISD students are considered economically disadvantaged, and last year the two groups handed out supplies to more than 4,000 local students combined. Why it matters here: These drives let neighbors help neighbors directly, whether by donating supplies, volunteering, or pointing a family who could use a hand toward the right event.

Precinct 5 honors its 21st Citizens Police Academy class
Harris County Precinct 5 celebrated the graduates of its 21st Citizens Police Academy this week, capping a 10-week program that takes West Houston, Cypress, Katy, and Fulshear-area residents behind the badge for hands-on law-enforcement training.
The academy is built to strengthen ties between deputies and the communities they serve. Why it matters here: Programs like this are how a lot of neighbors get to know the constable's office up close — and how the office builds trust block by block.

11-year-old hurt in Cypress e-bike crash
An 11-year-old riding an electric bike was hurt in a crash Saturday afternoon in the 18199 block of Misty Jade Lane in Cypress, according to the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office. Investigators said the child tried to go around a vehicle stopped at an intersection and collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle.
Deputies said emergency crews treated the juvenile at the scene, and the investigation is ongoing. Why it matters here: With e-bikes everywhere this summer, it's a sobering reminder to talk with kids about intersections, traffic, and safety gear before they head out.
