🍖 One of Cypress’s best BBQ trailers is firing up its smoker one last time — today

If you’ve ever waited in line at Brew:30 Taphouse for a tray of Heffernan BBQ, today’s your last call. Pitmaster Evan Heffernan — whose Texas Monthly–recognized trailer became a Telge Road institution — is serving his final plates Friday, June 19, at 15914 Telge Road.

The gut-punch part: Heffernan says 2026 was actually his best year yet, but a stack of obstacles he called “unsurpassable” made it time to shut it down. So if that brisket has ever made your weekend, go give it a proper sendoff — and tip well.

🏥 Our hospitals are spending nearly half a billion so you don’t have to drive downtown

Here’s a number that tells you exactly how fast Cypress is growing: three hospital systems are pouring more than $480 million into expansions right here, all so families don’t have to make the haul to the Texas Medical Center.

Memorial Hermann Cypress is building a $277.5 million patient tower (open fall 2027), Houston Methodist Cypress is adding $104 million in capacity (early 2027), and HCA’s North Cypress is finishing a $100 million North Patient Tower this spring. As one administrator put it, when patients are far from home, “the families can’t visit and be with them when they’re ill” — and that drive is about to get a lot shorter.

🥩 The Cypress spot that put Duck N Bao on the map has quietly closed

The little Sichuan kitchen that started it all has dimmed its lights. Duck N Bao’s original Cypress location, at 17333 Spring Cypress Road, Ste. H, closed for good on June 1 — the spot where a now-growing Houston favorite first found its fans.

The good news for the soup-dumpling faithful: this isn’t the end of the brand. Two other Houston-area locations are still open and slinging bao, so the cravings have somewhere to go — it’s just no longer around the corner.

🏠 A new report puts hard numbers on what your wallet already knew

Mark your calendar for November: Lone Star College’s trustees have officially called an election, and three board seats are up for grabs — including District 3, which covers parts of south-central Cy-Fair. Translation: you’ll help pick who steers one of the biggest community colleges in the country.

🎉 Juneteenth is here — and there’s a free celebration close to home

Juneteenth was born right here in Texas — June 19, 1865, the day enslaved Texans in Galveston finally learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It’s a date worth honoring, and you don’t have to go far to do it.

Harris County Precinct 4, led by Commissioner Lesley Briones, is hosting a free Juneteenth celebration at the Richard & Meg Weekley Community Center — expect live music, food trucks, family activities and community resources.
