🦘 Today’s Chuckle: What do you call a kangaroo lounging around on a Sunday? A pouch potato!

Good morning, neighbors! ☀️ Yesterday’s rain packed up and left, and it took our cooldown with it — today’s a hot, bright, sunscreen-and-sweet-tea kind of Sunday. So pour the iced coffee and ease in: today we’ve got a Florida pizzeria flying dough in from Brooklyn to Jones Road, a goodbye to one of Cypress’s most beloved BBQ trailers (in its best year, no less), 20,000 square feet of secondhand treasure about to open on Barker Cypress, and a feel-good story you’ll want to forward. Let’s go. 👇

☀️ Today’s weather: Cypress, the sky flipped the script overnight — yesterday’s gloom is gone and the sun came back hungry. We’re climbing to a high near 93°F under mostly sunny skies, but the humidity’s doing its sneaky thing: the heat index could touch 105°F by afternoon. 🥵 Rain’s basically off the table (just a stray pop-up), so this one’s all about shade, sunscreen, and refilling that water bottle twice as often as you think you need to. The pool is calling. 🏊

In this issue:

  • ☕ A cozy Colombian café opened on N. Eldridge — and it wants you to stay awhile

  • 🍕 Brooklyn dough, Philly rolls, Texas ribeye — a Florida pizzeria landed on Jones Road

  • 😢 Cypress’s most-decorated BBQ trailer served its last plate — in its best year ever

  • 🛍️ 20,000 square feet of secondhand treasure is about to open on Barker Cypress

  • 💛 She went from no address to her own front door — here’s who helped

  • 🗳️ Your November ballot just got longer — and it’s about your college district

  • 🤠 The Rodeo is writing its biggest check ever — and your barn kids are the reason

“Where coffee meets art” — a cozy Colombian café quietly opened on N. Eldridge

Cypress, if your coffee routine has gone a little autopilot, here’s your nudge to slow down. Tinto’s Café — a locally owned spot built around Colombian specialty coffee — opened May 31 at 8302 N. Eldridge Pkwy., Ste. 210 (the old Boba House space near West Road, a short hop from Cypress Ridge High School). This isn’t a grab-and-go chain; the whole place was designed around a single idea: get neighbors to sit down, connect, and actually taste the cup.

The beans come from Cafe Momento, the lattes and cortados come with care, and the signature “Tinto’s Ritual” is the move for the curious. Hungry? They’re slinging artisan sourdough focaccia sandwiches, plus matcha, chai, sparkling drinks and desserts. Remote workers, take note: warm lighting, comfy corners, and a theme of “where coffee meets art” make this a stay-a-while kind of morning.

Brooklyn dough, Philly rolls, Texas ribeye — a Florida pizzeria just landed on Jones Road

Some new restaurants cut corners on the supply chain. This one books its ingredients a plane ticket. Anthony & Luca’s Pizza Kitchen — a Florida-based franchise — quietly opened its first-ever Texas location in late May at 9618 Jones Road in Jersey Village, at the corner of Jones and Ranchstone. And founder Brian Petruzzi is not playing around with the details: the pizza dough is sourced from Brooklyn, the cheesesteak rolls come from Philadelphia, and the ribeye is from local Texas farms.

The menu is a New York-meets-Philly mashup — New York-style pies, Philly cheesesteaks and Italian street food. For a corner of Cy-Fair that’s been quietly stacking up new eats, this one’s worth the napkins. Consider your Sunday-night dinner question answered.

Cypress’s most-decorated BBQ trailer is serving its last plate — in its best year ever

This one stings. After nearly two decades, Heffernan BBQ — the Texas Monthly-recognized, pecan-smoked Cypress institution — served its final plates Friday, June 19 at Brew:30 Taphouse on Telge Road. The hardest part: it wasn’t failing. “2026 has been our best year to date, but it isn’t going to be enough,” pitmaster Evan Heffernan wrote. “It’s time to shut it down and move on.”

If you ate here, you know it was never just brisket. The story started in the early 2000s with Bob and Jeannie Heffernan and a borrowed trailer. When Bob was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2017, son Evan left college to learn the craft and carry the family’s pecan-smoked traditions forward — earning a spot on Texas Monthly’s Best BBQ in Houston list and a second-place finish at the 2024 HOUBBQ Throwdown along the way. Evan left the door cracked: “I’m not sure what comes next, but I don’t think this is the end for me in BBQ.” Thank you, Heffernan family — Cypress was lucky to have you.

20,000 square feet of other people’s treasures is about to open on Barker Cypress

Thrifters, warm up your hangers. A new Value World thrift superstore is in the final stretch of a roughly $1 million buildout at 6960 Barker Cypress Road — a 20,733-square-foot space that locals will remember as a Planet Fitness, and originally an H-E-B. No grand-opening date yet, but the renovation is essentially done, so keep an eye on that storefront.

Here’s the twist that makes it interesting: unlike a typical donation-bin thrift store, Value World says about 99% of its merchandise comes through nonprofit partners and recycling programs, each piece sorted and priced individually — which means the inventory churns constantly and no two visits look alike. (Fun footnote: “Value World” is the rebranded name for the former Value Village Texas, now matching its Michigan and Ohio stores.) Treasure hunt incoming.

She went from no address to her own front door — here’s who helped

In a week full of openings and closings, here’s the story to actually sit with. A local mother who faced homelessness, uncertainty, and more than one fresh start has — with help from Cy-Fair Helping Hands and a community that showed up — built a stable home and a real path forward for her kids.

It’s the kind of quiet, hard-won win that doesn’t make the loud headlines but says everything about who we are out here. If it leaves you wanting to do something, Cy-Fair Helping Hands is the local nonprofit at the center of it — a good one to keep in your back pocket the next time you’ve got time, goods, or a few dollars to give.

Your November ballot just got longer — and it’s about your college district

Mark it down now so it’s not a surprise in the booth: on June 4, the Lone Star College System board called a Nov. 3 election for three trustee seats — and two of the three districts on the ballot reach right into our backyard. District 3 covers parts of south-central Cy-Fair, and District 9 covers pieces of Cypress, Tomball and north Klein (District 4 rounds out the trio in north-central Houston).

Trustee terms run six years, so whoever wins helps steer LSC-CyFair — and your tax dollars — until 2031. The incumbents up this year are Board Secretary Iesheia Wilson (District 3), Art Murillo (District 4) and Jim Cain (District 9). File this under “small ballot line, big local impact.”

The Rodeo is writing its biggest check ever — and your barn kids are the reason

If your family lives by the show-barn calendar, this one’s for you. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo — which has poured more than $660 million into Texas youth and education — just announced the largest facilities investment in its history: a brand-new agricultural complex along Highway 288 built to serve students, exhibitors and families “for generations to come.”

It’s a regional move with a very local ripple. Cy-Fair sends a small army of 4-H and FFA kids to that arena every year, and a bigger, better ag complex is a bet on exactly the kind of livestock-showing, scholarship-chasing kids our neighborhoods are full of. Big barn energy.

🧠 Scoop Trivia

Yesterday’s answer: That new Wings ’N More Express on Barker Cypress traces back to the original Wings ’N More, founded in College Station back in 1987. 🍗

Today: Tinto’s Café serves Colombian coffee — and “tinto” is what Colombians call a small cup of black coffee. But in everyday Spanish elsewhere, “vino tinto” means what kind of drink entirely? Reply with your guess — answer in tomorrow’s Scoop.
